February PBL Focus

Congratulations to all SIPPS students who have been doing their personal best in all areas. The teachers are all very proud of your efforts. Keep it up!

Principal’s Message

We have just had another full week of learning and celebrating at SIPPS. I am so proud of how well our students have taken to being back at school. Everyone is full of positive energy and it’s a wonderful place to be.

The most exciting event was of course the official opening of our playground!

It was wonderful to have Mrs Tegg back, along with Mrs Emmy Druce from the P&C, Mr Jonathan O’Dea our local state member Mr Matt Oakley from the Department of Education Asset Services to help us celebrate this milestone.

The SRC leaders Daniel, Nienke and Sabrina did a fantastic job of leading the ceremony and represented the students very well. Congratulations to all students who sat and listened attentively to the speeches showing respect, responsibility and personal best. I was very proud of you all.

Reminder about Meet the teacher evening

We value and appreciate the essential role that parents/carers take in being partners in their child/ren’s education. To promote and maintain positive partnerships in learning we will be running the following events:

Meet the Teacher Evening – Tomorrow 19th February

5:00 – 6:00pm K-2 classrooms
6:00 – 6:30pm Whole school information in Kindergarten and 1/2 Blue room
6:30 – 7:30pm 3- 6 classrooms

Please note that the combined session will now be held in the Kindergarten and 1/2 Blue room

School Fees – Term 1 Invoices

Government schools provide ‘free instruction’ which refers to the provision of teaching staff, administration and facilities in connection with instruction of the standard curriculum program, including reasonable adjustments for students with disabilities. However, without some ‘user-pays’ options, we would be unable to offer SIPPS students more than the basic school-curriculum.

Each term, the school issues invoices to cover student access to things such as PSSA sport and carnivals, school excursions and incursions, specialised sports, art, music, dance, programs, school magazines and software subscriptions to replace textbooks.

At SIPPS, we do aim to keep these additional costs to a minimum so that they are reasonable and affordable to parents at the school.

Prompt payment is greatly appreciated and ensures that we can continue to offer SIPPS students an enriched and enhanced curriculum.

Parents and Citizens

Being an active member of the SIPPS Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) is a great way to contribute to our school in a positive way. I am looking forward to the P&C’s first meeting this Wednesday evening 20th February from 7:15pm in the school staffroom.

Clean Up Australia Day

Once again SIPPS students and staff will be participating in the annual Clean Up Australia Day for schools on Friday 2nd March. Each class will be allocated an area of the school to tidy. Parents are encouraged to provide their child with a pair of gardening gloves for the day (no plastic disposable gloves please). At SIPPS we are always looking for ways to be environmentally responsible and sustainable. At the front of the administrative building we now have two new recycling bins - the blue bin is for paper, and the yellow bin is for glass and plastic. We are also continuing to collect fruit and vegetable scraps from the classrooms to make compost for our eco garden.

School Community Charter

The NSW Department of Education has introduced a School Community Charter for all members of NSW Public School communities. It has been developed in consultation with a wide range of stakeholders. The School Community Charter outlines the responsibilities of parents, carers, educators and school staff in NSW public schools to ensure our learning environments are collaborative, supportive and cohesive.

What our school provides

NSW Public Schools work to create positive environments for students, staff and the entire school community that support student learning. At SIPPS we strive to ensure that every student is known, valued and cared for.

The best education happens when students, parents and schools work together.

We all play a part

Parents and carers play an important role in the SIPPS school community. The School Community Charter informs parents and carers on how to engage with NSW Public Schools. Read the School Community Charter to ensure you understand how important it is to create a positive learning environment for our students here at SIPPS.

Please ensure that you have sent updated Anaphylaxis an Asthma plans to the office. We must have this vital information to keep your children safe at school.

ASCIA Action Plans for Anaphylaxis have been developed as a concise and easy to follow, single page document to assist in emergency treatment of anaphylaxis, as part of a comprehensive anaphylaxis management plan. The plans are medical documents that should be completed and signed by the treating medical or nurse practitioner.

https://allergy.org.au/hp/anaphylaxis/ascia-action-plan-for-anaphylaxis/

The process of developing an asthma action plan with your doctor is important. This should be a discussion of your individual circumstances, asthma patterns and triggers, and current management. Your personal written asthma action plan is a reminder of that discussion.

Written asthma action plans are one of the most effective asthma management tools available. If you or someone you are responsible for has asthma, ask about developing an asthma action plan.

I’m looking forward to another inspiring fortnight of learning and laughing!

Celebrating Student Success

Inspiring & Nurturing Successful Lifelong Learners

St Ives Park Public School is a PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) school. PBL helps schools to develop consistent systems to discourage unproductive behaviour. PBL establishes strong school-wide universal systems that promote early intervention, and the teaching and acknowledging of social-emotional skills.

Universal prevention is the most important and powerful aspects of a whole school systems approach. Universal prevention focuses on preventing problems and creating an environment that supports student learning and wellbeing.

Effective, evidence-based classroom management and instruction are critical components of universal prevention.

The school's learning and support teams and/or PBL teams work to prevent problem behaviour and increase the likelihood of academic success by creating positive learning environments for all.

Establishing strong systems of universal prevention for all students helps to reduce the number of students who need additional support. This helps the school to work more intensively with students who have additional learning and support needs.

Families are important members of the school's community.

When schools and families work together toward a common goal of helping all children and young people to be successful, it is much more likely to happen. Families have valuable insights and information about how their children learn best and what help they need.

Families benefit from learning how to use similar strategies at home for teaching and supporting their children's social and behaviour skills.

There are many important parts to our discipline policy and they all work together to ensure that our students are happy and safe at school. In line with the Department of Education’s Student Discipline in Government Schools Policy these elements include:

  • the discipline code or school rules (expectations).
  • strategies and practices to promote positive student behaviour, including specific strategies to maintain a climate of respect.
  • strategies and practices to recognise and reinforce student achievement.
  • strategies and practices to manage inappropriate student behaviour.

This week the Robo Bricks students built a combustion engine, that is, the petrol, diesel or gasoline engines used in cars, trucks, motorcycles, locomotives and ships. The first use of a combustion engine in a car was in 1885, a car built by Karl Benz.

STEM learnings:

  • Converting circular to linear motion - the gear-40 turns in a circular motion, and has a beam-8 attached moving in a linear motion up and down. Similarly, the pistons inside a car's engine push up and down, turning the crankshaft in a circular motion.
  • Flywheel - a flywheel stores rotational energy and applies it to ensure smooth rotations. In this model, as in a car's engine, the flywheel (propellor with weighted beam-2s) ensures a smooth conversion of circular to linear motion.

The programming objectives were to gradually speed up, slow down and come to a stop, as well as other movements and sounds typically found while driving in a car.

We are so lucky to have Rachel back this term teaching us all about Gymnastics! In Term One students will participate in a program that addresses the rapidly changing contexts in primary schools and student development, based on the PDHPE NSW Curriuclum.

Over the next few weeks students will be learning the fundamentals of Gymnastics, including balancing, bar work and trampoline. This program is not only fun, it also promotes team building and collaboration.

Safer Internet Day

Tuesday 5th February was Safer Internet Day. This is a global initiative that students at SIPPS participated in. It aims to help encourage individuals to create a better internet by developing four critical skills; respect, responsibility, reasoning and resilience.

Staying Safe on the Internet:

  • Don’t share personal information online.
  • Check with a trusted adult.
  • Don’t chat with anyone you don’t know.
  • Report anything that upsets you
