Principal’s Message

Welcome Back

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to new SIPPS students and their families. It is wonderful to see the positive growth of our school community. All classes were quick to settle into the familiar school routines last week. Term 2 will continue to feature quality teaching and assessment practices while maintaining a strong focus on Student Wellbeing and Positive Behaviour for Learning.

Student Wellbeing – Getting on Track in Time! (Got It!)

Last Monday, teachers returned to undertake training in ways to support students’ social and emotional wellbeing. This included the first instalment of Emotion Coaching Training that is being delivered to teachers and parents through partnership with the NSW Health Got it! Team.

The team will also hold two Parent Sessions on the following evenings:

Tuesday 8 May

5:30-7:00pm

Tuesday 22 May

5:30-7:00pm

The program will assist parents of all school aged children, from pre-school to Year 12 to enhance their emotional and social skills and improve and prevent disruptive behaviours. The skills learnt will increase your child’s ability to manage feelings, manage friendships and solve problems. It offers parents:

  • Parenting strategies
  • Support in their parenting roles to continue promoting a positive family environment
  • New skills to make a positive difference to their child’s social and emotional wellbeing during this important developmental period
  • Additional social and support networks
  • Opportunities to continue building positive relationships with the school.

We hope to see you all at this very valuable opportunity.

Opportunity Classes

Opportunity classes cater for highly achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These classes help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.

Applications for opportunity class placement are considered mainly on the combined results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test and school assessments. The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held on Wednesday 1 August 2018.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2019, you need to apply soon. You will need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).

The application website opens on Tuesday 1 May 2018 and closes on Friday 18 May 2018. No late applications will be accepted. You must submit only ONE application for each student.

The application website and relevant dates are displayed below for those students applying for Year 5 entry to an opportunity class for 2019. Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from Tuesday 1 May 2018.

LEST WE FORGET

On Thursday April 12, we held a special commemoration assembly at 12 noon in the hall. In attendance were special guests representing the Roseville RSL sub-Branch and Royal Australian Navy. Student representatives from each class lay a posy of flowers at the base of the flag pole as a floral tribute and students played in the band and sang the Last ANZAC.

On Friday April 13, our School Captains were invited to represent SIPPS and lay a wreath for the ANZAC event at Sir Eric Woodward Memorial School.

SIPPS Cross Country Carnival

On Wednesday 11 April, students participated in our annual cross country carnival. After walking the short distance to Acron Oval, students ran in their respective age groups on a circuit which took in some of the bush reserve. Thank you to parent volunteers and Miss Emerson and Mr Dimmers for organising and running this event.

NAPLAN Timetable

Best wishes to students in Years 3 and 5 who will sit NAPLAN tests next week.

Kindergarten Open Morning

Enrolments are now being accepted for Kindergarten 2019. We look forward to welcoming families who are planning to join our wonderful school community in 2019. An information morning for new and current SIPPS parents will be held from 9:30 to 11:30am on Monday 21 May.

Reading Tutors Volunteers

Great start! Thanks to all parent/community volunteers who have joined us to work in partnership with our Year 1 and 2 students. We are still looking for a couple of mums, dads, grand-friends to work on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings. Thursday is particularly short of reading volunteers. Please contact Ms Reid through the school office.

Winter School Uniform

Please ensure that after transitioning into the cooler months (Weeks 1 & 2 only); students will wear full winter uniform to school. Parents are kindly asked to use their judgement and ensure that all students are in a correct school uniform. Thank you to our P&C Uniform Shop Coordinators Ms Fisk and Mr Wood and parent volunteers for the great job they do running our uniform shop and supporting SIPPS families.

Thank you to the P&C for providing girls at SIPPS with an alternative Winter Uniform. It looks very smart indeed.

Best Wishes
Gillian Tegg

Celebrating Student Success

Chess Success

Congratulations to Matan for representing our school at last month’s Inter-School Chess Competition.

‘On Thursday the 12 of April, I went to the Sydney Academy Of Chess Inter-School Chess Competition in Curl Curl North Public School. I played 7 games of chess in 6 hours. Our school came 10th. This was the first time our school ever competed in a chess competition! This is a great achievement for me and our school!’

NSW Premier's Sporting Challenge

Our school has registered to take part in the 2018 Premier’s Sporting Challenge (PSC). The NSW PSC encourages students and staff over a 10 week period to participate in a broad range of sports and recreational pursuits to develop their understanding of the importance of sport and physical activity.

During the 10 week Challenge students and staff record their physical activity each day. Any daily physical activity which is moderate to vigorous in intensity can be accrued.

Award levels for the Challenge reflect a daily activity time commitment - either as part of a class/team or each individual student. Activities may include time spent in a broad range of sports during lunchtime, in school sport programs, class time, before or after school and on weekends.

Notes from the Office

Children's crossings

These are part-time crossings which operate just before and after school hours, as well as other times such as school excursions and lunch times. They are highlighted by red flags with the words CHILDREN CROSSING on them.

When the flags are displayed you must slow down and stop before the stop line if a pedestrian is on or entering the crossing. You must not proceed until all pedestrians have left the crossing.

You must not stop on or within 20 metres before or 10 metres after, a children’s crossing.

Combined children's and pedestrian crossing

Some pedestrian crossings are used as children’s crossings at some times during the day. The display of CHILDREN CROSSING flags means that the children's crossing is operating.

When the flags are not displayed the crossing operates as a normal pedestrian crossing.
