SASS RECOGNITION WEEK

This week our school is celebrating School Administrative and Support Staff (SASS) Recognition Week. SASS staff have vital roles in the success of our school community and include our amazing ladies in the Office: Mrs Fazzolari, Mrs Aylmer, Mrs Rawiller and Mrs McAlinden. Our magnificent School Learning Support Officers: Mr Takach, Mrs Biggs and Miss Bass and our wonderful General Assistant Mr Van Bussel.

Thank you for everything you do to support students, staff and families at St Ives Park Public School.

ILLNESS

During the last few weeks we have had staff and student absences due to the current flu virus that is sweeping the community. We have a number of students coming to school unwell. Symptoms involve sore throat, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and headache. Please be mindful and keep your child at home if they are sick, to help us prevent further spread of the virus.

NSW Health describes people with influenza as typically experiencing some or all of the following symptoms for at least a week:

  • Fever and chills
  • Cough, sore throat and runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle aches, joint pains, headaches and fatigue (feeling very tired)
  • Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea (more common in children than adults) Some symptoms may last for more than a week. Some people may also experience very mild symptoms, particularly if they have some immunity from previous infection.

How is it spread?

  • Influenza viruses are mainly spread by droplets made when an infected person coughs or sneezes
  • Influenza can also spread after touching surfaces where infected droplets have landed
  • Influenza can be spread to someone by an infected person even before their symptoms begin
  • Adults with influenza are infectious from the day before their symptoms start until 5-7 days later
  • Young children and people with weakened immune systems may be infectious for longer.

Take action to stop the spread of influenza by remembering to:

  • Cover your face when you cough or sneeze and throw used tissues in a rubbish bin
  • Wash your hands thoroughly and often. Wash hands for at least 10 seconds, especially after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose, or use an alcohol-based hand rub
  • Stay home until you’re well. Wait at least 24 hours after your fever resolves so that you aren’t likely to infect other people. Keep sick children away from school and other activities
  • Call ahead to see a doctor. If you think you may have influenza and you need to see a doctor, remember to call first so the clinic can take precautions to reduce the risk to other people.

Further information can be found on the NSW Health website:

http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/

In addition NSW Health has a Health Alert warning on viral gastroenteritis. For more information, visit the NSW Health website for factsheets on gastroenteritis:

ATTENDANCE

Regular attendance at school is essential to assist students to maximise their potential. Schools work in partnership with parents to promote regular attendance of students.

In line with this policy, parents are required to explain the absences of their children from school promptly and within seven days to the school. An explanation for absence must be provided to the school within 7 days of the first day of any period of absence. Please contact the school office if you would like further information on this policy.

PSSA SOCCER

Congratulations to all Junior and Senior soccer players on a fantastic season! Everyone played well and should be very proud of their achievements. I am already looking forward to next season.

Miss Emerson

This year PSSA has been great fun and we won most of our games. The SIPPS team were never ball hogs and we passed the ball a lot to each other. Training on Friday mornings was always great fun with Jack's dad. We met new friends and played against some of our friends in other schools.

Go SIPPS.

George 3/4 SE

We have played our last PSSA soccer match of the season, this year has been the best ever. I loved playing in the team with all my friends. We played really well as a team and passed the ball a lot. We had so much fun playing soccer this year because we had GREAT coaches - Matt, Miss Emerson and Mrs Hayllar.

I loved having lots of support from all the parents that came to the matches, I hope more will come next time.

Thank you to all students and parents for their involvement in a wonderful season!

Miss Forsyth and Miss Shin

Maribeth! Pass me the ball!”

My first time playing netball was so much fun. I hardly knew where any of the positions but I knew I would learn. Now at the end of the season I know all the positions and most of the rules. I have really enjoyed playing netball this year.

Inspiring & Nurturing Successful Lifelong Learners

Dance Program

This term, students in K-6 have been participating in a dance program run by Got Game teacher Rachel. They have enjoyed learning new dance moves with a focus on different styles of dance throughout the decades. The students are looking forward to showcasing what they have learnt at the SIPPS Spectacular on the 19th September. Keep an eye out for more details about the SIPPS spectacular to be released soon.

I like dancing because I get to learn different cool moves.
Lucas KH

I really like when we play games in extra time. I really like the heads and tails game that Rachel taught us because there are no winners or losers.
Cora 1S

The best thing about dancing is when you to listen to music and make up cool moves to match the music.
Braedon 1/2E

Dancing lessons are really fun because I get to dance with my friends and I like learning new dances.
Isabella 2FT

I like this song so much! I've seen the movie! I can't believe we're doing this song. Can we learn the moves now? Everyone quiet down...we're going to learn the dance. I was so excited!

It's our first time ever doing a dance with Rachel, she is our sport teacher and we are learning a dance for the end of term school concert. Every class is doing a dance from a certain decade. 3/4F is doing the 80's and we are dancing to the song Footloose.

The dance is really catchy, so nobody is forgetting the moves! We have almost learnt the whole dance! I can't wait for the performance!
Tamara 3/4F

I like the dance program because it is fun and it teaches me how to dance. Dance is a very good sport.
Matan 3/4SE

I like the dance because of the upbeat song and easy yet effective dance moves.
Meshma 5/6H

Amazingly amazing! Rachel is so good and so nice. She is my first teacher at both of the schools that I have attended.
Mia 5/6S

Last Monday students in Year 6 experienced another engaging and memorable time at Stage Coach. During first period of English, they decoded word puzzles and had the opportunity to create some and share them with their peers. Next, students continued working on their foam prints during Visual Arts. Finally in their last period of HSIE, students learnt about biomes such as the Great Barrier Reef and different environments around the world. Can you solve this world puzzle created by Louie?

FATHERS’ DAY PORTRAITS

Here is a selection of portraits created by students in KH.

Their fathers look very handsome in their specially designed ties – some have colourful collars as well. Kindergarten students enjoyed creating these with permanent marker and posca pen.

What a creative gift for Fathers’ Day!

Library

To celebrate Book Week 2017, St. Ives Park Public School welcomed Tim Harris, the author of ‘Exploding Endings’ and performers Super Duper, who presented a musical show that featured books from the 2017 CBCA shortlist.

Throughout the day, years 3-6 got to meet Tim Harris and hear about the inspirations behind his writing and some of his stories. Students were also able to have books personally signed by Tim. His workshops were interactive and full of laughter, there were many questions from students and the day was thoroughly entertaining for all.

In the afternoon K-2 had a fantastic time watching the Super Duper Musical. The performers were engaging and entertaining. The performance incorporated four books that the students have read throughout the term into a musical production. There was a lot of laughter; singing and interaction from the K-2 students.

The day was very successful and I was given a great deal of positive feedback from both students and teachers.

Helping Hands OOSH & Vacation Care

Helping Hands

We will be running a holiday program during the school holidays: Monday 25th September – Friday 6th October, we are open from 7am – 6.30pm each day. Our program is included in this newsletter or you can collect a copy from us in the OOSH room! Children from other schools are welcome to enrol for the holiday program, so if your child has friends who attend another school feel free to pass our information along.

Part of our policy and procedure requires parents to notify us if their child will be absent from OOSH for any reason. This could include going on a holiday, representing the school at an event or being sick. Parents can contact us by phone, text or email to notify us of an absence. If we are unable to contact parents and locate a child by 3.40pm we are required to contact the police and report the child missing. If your routine changes make sure you let us know!

If you’re interested in using the service during the term or during the holidays please pop in and ask for enrolment forms so we can get you started. It’s a good idea to be enrolled so that if you ever need last minute care you only need to make a call to book your children in.
