Online Permission Notes and Information
In response to parent feedback, we have moved to online permission notes. Payments were already online and we have been able to integrate the notes to families into the payment system for a more streamlined system. Thank you to Mrs Fazzolari who has been working closely with the SchoolBytes team to facilitate this change.
Kindergarten and new enrolment tour
We welcome any current parents and new parents who have Kindergarten students commencing in 2023. We will share with our families the SIPPS difference and how we support student learning. Parents who are enrolling students are able to go to the school website to complete enrolments.
If parents know of any parents interested in joining SIPPS in 2023, please encourage them to make contact with the school office for further information and support.
New school tour date is scheduled for Monday 8th August 2022.
Joint IEU and NSW Teacher’s Federation Strike on 30th June 2022
SIPPS letter to come home to families today.
The NSW Teachers Federation has directed its membership to take industrial action in the form of a 24-hour strike on Thursday 30 June 2022.
The NSW Teachers Federation has directed its membership to take industrial action in the form of a 24-hour strike on Thursday 30 June 2022. As a result of this strike, our school will be non-operational on this date and no student supervision will be available. This means you will need to make alternative care arrangements on this day for your student/s. To support learning from home, resources can be accessed on the department’s Learning remotely hub.
The department states they have been negotiating with the NSW Teachers Federation since October last year to reach an agreement on the new Teachers Award.
The department is considering this change in relation to the Teachers Award, which is next before the Industrial Relations Commission (IRC) on 29 June 2022. Dates have been reserved in October 2022 for the Teachers Award matter to be arbitrated by a full bench of the IRC, and the Minister is hopeful for a swift outcome after this process.
Thank you for your support and understanding during this period of disruption.
Parent Survey
Thank you to the SIPPS parents who have taken the time to answer the SIPPS survey. You still have time to complete the survey. It will close tomorrow, be quick to share your thoughts!
Feedback to parents from the survey will be included in a Term 3 newsletter.
Teacher Professional Learning
Staff at SIPPS have been participating in intensive, ongoing professional learning at the school. This term we have provided teacher learning to support our School Improvement Plan (SIP) and to support staff upskilling in the key areas of reading and Mathematics. All schools in NSW in their SIP have targets for reading and Mathematics improvement for student learning.
Some of the Term 2 Professional Learning in recent week has included:
- MANSW Expert leader and Instructional Leader engaging with class teachers to provide feedback to enhance classroom practices directly related to teaching Rich Tasks in Mathematics across K-6 classrooms. This is ongoing throughout the year.
- Vocabulary in reading. As per an earlier newsletter inclusion to SIPPS parents, staff have been working through the current research which underpins the importance of vocabulary in the development of reading and learning.
- SIPPS and THPS staff collaboratively undertaking training in DoE Trauma Informed Practice Modules on Wednesday 21st and 29th June in two twilight learning sessions. These sessions are 6 hours in total and are scheduled ‘in lieu’ of the Staff Development Day on 20th December 2022.
Congratulations to the SIPPS P&C
Great news! Our P&C President, Mr Stewart Duncan has been successful in achieving another funding grant. This will enable the P&C and school to co-fund the replacement of the current P&C fridge and freezer located in the school canteen area.
SIPPS Parents
SIPPS parents are welcome on site prior to the 9:05am school bell. You may escort your child/ren to their classroom or visit the school office to seek assistance. After school if you are collecting your child/ren from an activity you may enter the school grounds, however, you are not able to wait in the synthetic grass, play equipment or Hall COLA areas as these are utilised by the Helping Hands service each day.
Please make appointments to see your child’s class teacher for face to face meetings. All class teachers are still escorting classes to the gates each afternoon.
Thank you to our SIPPS families for all your support during the Covid-19 restricted access times.
A final word to end the term
It has again been a busy Semester 1 here at SIPPS. It is great to see so many more parents venturing into the school grounds of a morning.
Term Three is set to be exhilarating with a range of great events lined up including: Education Week, Book Week, SIPPS Spectacular and two SRC fund raising events for students.
In Term 3 we will be calling for a range of parent support with getting the SIPPS Spectacular up and running – costumes and some simple props to add to the event. If you are keen and wish to get in touch, please let me know!
Our students have worked very hard and are looking forward to their holidays from formal learning.
Wishing all our students and their families a safe and fun filled holiday and we are looking forward to seeing everyone back at school on Tuesday 19th July, 2022.

Life Education
We are excited to welcome Healthy Harold back to SIPPS next term! Our Life Education program will run in Term 3 during weeks 1&2. Each of our classes will have a session with Harold and develop their understanding of Personal Health & Development. This program will then continue in class through the term.
How can you consolidate your child’s learning these holidays?
Literacy
Read with your child, let them read to you, talk to them about the books they are reading. Visit the local library and find some fiction / non fiction books that they are interested in. Remember there are pictures, short stories, novels and poetry that all children can enjoy. If going out for a day trip, talk to your child about the destination, its name and why it’s important, what it is close to and how long it will take to get there. Ask your child to evaluate and compare books, what were their preferences? Why? We want children to be critical readers. In our previous newsletter we have listed articles on vocabulary and how you can assist your child to extend their vocabulary. A richer vocabulary allows students to read more complex texts and adds depth to their writing.
Numeracy
Encourage your child to ‘see the maths’ in everyday life. When involving them in everyday activities such as cooking, talk about measuring and estimation; while shopping, children can compare prices, look for products that have the best value, round the prices of products up to the nearest dollar or estimate the total cost. While at home, children can create a map of the inside or outside spaces or discuss how they might work out the area or perimeter. By talking to children about the maths they see, they make connections with their learning at school and build a stronger understanding. Great resources are available at the link below:

Class Stationery
As it is the end of Semester 1, many of the student’s stationery supplies have depleted. Please check your child has a fresh supply of any items that may need replenishment. A list of class resources that your child should have will be sent home this week for parents to reference.
Absences
Please ensure if your child is absent from school that you provide a written reason for their absence within 3 days. This can be completed quickly through the school app by clicking on the Absentee tile, or you can email the school directly. Parent’s are legally required to notify the school of their child’s absence from school.
Kind regards,
Leanne Hayllar and Alison Wright
Stage 1 Highlights
Stage One have been enjoying learning about forces this term. Students designed, tested and modified foil boats to see how they could best make them float and be able to be moved in different directions. They had a wonderful time exploring concepts like gravity and buoyancy with hands on experiments.

Art

Stage 1
It's been a busy semester in the art room with the stage 1 classes creating some wonderful artwork. The year 1 and 2 students have looked at the work of Henri Matisse and produced artwork inspired by his 'fish in a bowl' series of paintings. They used watercolour paints and collage to create their interpretations and added some abstract shapes to the background inspired by Matisse's cut out artworks. Woven paper fish have been produced and they all have their own personality. All students managed to weave their paper together to create their final outcome.
The students have experimented with printing and stamping, using a range of items. They used plastic forks, straws, paint scrapers, sponges, and cardboard to create some fabulous flower prints. They turned out really well and are extremely eye-catching and colourful!
In the past couple of weeks, the students have got to work with clay, which is always an exciting time in the art room. This term the students created their own paper cacti and planted them in their handmade clay plant pots. The students always enjoy working with the clay and their plants look beautiful.
I can't wait to see the all the fabulous artwork the stage 1 students will produce next term!

Band
Senior Band –City of Sydney Eisteddfod- We had an incredible day achieving a “Highly Commended” at the Eisteddfod. The band represented the school with pride and respected all the other musicians by listening to other performances. Having an opportunity to perform in a concert hall is a daunting experience for the first time and waiting in the wings in semi darkness can certainly make a professional musician nervous, however, the students in the St Ives Park Senior Band should be commended on their ability to rise to the occasion and perform.
Dan William – our adjudicator is an amazing professional educator, who has performed around the world as a sought-after classical trumpet player and conductor.
Junior Band – Exciting news – the Junior band will be performing at assembly on Wednesday. Their first school assembly for the group and every player has been practicing “Old Macdonald had a band” for the performance. They are thrilled to have the opportunity to play in front of their peers.
Term 3 – Band recommences on the 10th July.
