Book Week 2021

Book Week has brought many smiles to the faces of our students. With Book Week dress ups and Book Face Competitions SIPPS students have been busy exploring Old Worlds, New Worlds and Other Worlds!
Thank you to all our students for their participation and for the SIPPS staff for organising these online events.
Week 8 Learning From Home
This week is Wellbeing Week for students at SIPPS. Staff will provide reduced required tasks on Tuesday and Thursday. Each day on the timetable students will be offered activities which are focussed on individual choices to develop their awareness of well-being strategies and patterns of behaviours which support them as individuals. Children are life long learners and this will strengthen their knowledge of their strategies. Activities may include:- mindfulness, quiet and creative activities, gratitude and kindness, fitness, dance, yoga, aerobics.
Kindergarten 2022 - Orientation Planning
SIPPS staff are currently planning for our Kindergarten Orientation program and planning for 2022 Kindergarten students.
As we are unable to offer school tours under the current Health and Education restrictions, we would like to invite interested and new parents to opportunity to meet with the SIPPS team and parents at 7:00 pm on Wednesday 8th September to connect and participate in a Q&A session.
Please view the video to access registration options for the evening.
Face to Face teaching in Term 4
The announcement has been made that specific cohorts of students will return from Monday October 25th. There will be further information provided to schools this term to support our planning and I will keep our families informed.
- Kindergarten and Year 1 will resume on site at SIPPS on Monday 25th October.
- Year 2 and Year 6 will resume on site at SIPPS on the 1st November.
- Years 3, 4 and 5 will resume on site at SIPPS on Monday 8th November.
As plans for next term are finalised, I will inform our community.
SIPPS P&C
SIPPS P&C have been working really hard to support families and have some lovely Father’s Day gift voucher draws coming up this week.
There is also an exciting colouring competition pending … keep an eye out for more information from your SIPPS P&C!
An ongoing thank you to the kindness of our parents and the P&C who have been donating coffees via the Coffee Van for staff. This has been a very thoughtful gesture and greatly appreciated by all staff!
Renovations and fencing at SIPPS
At present, all work on school sites under the Department’s tender processes are under review, as the Asset Unit within the Department of Education require many steps prior to approval to work on school sites to re/commence. Successful companies who have tendered for the renovations and fencing contracts with the DoE are required to have their Covid Safety Plan in place and to participate in further WHS checks before they resume their work. This is why the toilet renovation has not as yet recommenced. The fencing start date has been delayed to the 13th September to ensure site safety.
Happy Father’s Day to all SIPPS Dads
Father’s Day is this Sunday 5th September. Wishing all our SIPPS Dads a happy day with your children and families as you celebrate together.
My warmest wishes to our SIPPS Community.
Stay home, stay safe and stay well!

Kindy Rainbow work samples
K Rainbow have been working hard with their writing at home. Writing complete sentences and adding adjectives to make their writing more descriptive and interesting. They had fun writing a make believe recount of their weekend last week! There were many fun adventures. Read about Venkat's fun trip to the moon.
K/1 Turquoise work samples
This work is by Laila in Year One in K/1T. Each week student's in K/1T write recounts about their weekends. This is a really great way for students to write about familiar events and to learn how to provide more detail in their writing. Laila has used lots of descriptive language in her writing to describe each of the things she did over the weekend. She has written in paragraphs and each of her sentences start differently which makes her writing interesting to read. Well done Laila this is a very impressive recount.
1/2 Emerald work samples
This work is by Isabella (Izzy) in Year One.
Stage One has been learning about how to write a creative narrative and a warning tale. Izzy made a creative character and turned a story she knew well into her own. Izzy used capital letters and punctuation successfully throughout her story, as well as some awesome adjectives! Her Silly Snake definitely learnt his lesson about making silly faces!
3/4 Purple work samples
Stage 2 greatly enjoyed their Maths challenge, last week, when they investigated how many times they could successfully shoot a pair of rolled up socks into a basket. Students could have 10 attempts using their left and right hands to shoot their socks into the basket. This challenged students to think mathematically. How could we record each shot? How could we represent our results? How could we use a digital platform to show our learning?
Rhys in 3/4 Purple, kept a tally of his throws and created a bar graph to represent his results, using Excel. He also used Google Classroom to post a video showing his sock basketball toss skills!
3/4 Yellow work samples
This term we have been focusing on the structure and language features of narrative texts. In particular, we've looked at how to improve our narratives by including more descriptive language. This activity began with a visual prompt, which the students used to develop a character and story orientation. Then they used a writing scaffold to plan out the rest of the story. Once they had written their first draft, students used a checklist to edit and improve their writing. In Stage 2, we have been working really hard on improving our handwriting and the presentation of our work. So the last step in his learning sequence was to publish the story by writing it in their neatest cursive handwriting! This is one great example from Fraser in Year 3.
5/6 Blue work samples
Stage 3 have begun working on our persuasive writing. The topic ‘taking better care of our environment’ is something many students feel passionately about as you can read in Eva's work, convincing us not to use single use plastics.
Single use plastics
The water on your fins feels smooth and relaxing. You're hoping to find something to satisfy your children for dinner. Suddenly you see a jellyfish. It looks a bit unusual, but you are satisfied with anything at this point. You bite down expecting to feel the juicy insides of a jellyfish, but no, it's a single use plastic bag choking you and your last thought swims in your mind. “Please survive without me, my children.”
It is unacceptable to make poor sea creatures suffer for our mistakes. How would you like it if every time you went out you had a chance of dying? I don’t know if you realise how much single use plastics humans use. Around 40% of plastics consumed are single-use. It's so easy to just throw away a piece of plastic and not think of the effects it will make. Imagine you were at the beach and it was a very hot day. You had forgotten to bring a reusable water bottle so you buy one from the shop. After it's empty, throw it in the bin and you think that’s that. It misses, and because single use plastics are very light it is swept away by the wind and into the SEA. Now you probably just go home without a second thought about the water you threw away but your carelessness may cost a sea creature their life. So if you don’t hear the resounding clunk of it going into the bin, check and make sure it did or even better bring a reusable one.
You cannot disagree that we are polluting the environment. Plastic bags are really bad for the environment because they can take more than a thousand years to break down. Over 5 trillion pieces of plastic end up in our ocean, 80% of that are plastic bags. The problem with plastic bags is that they remain toxic even after they break down. How many plastic bags do you think are in the Atlantic Ocean? 300 million plastic bags go into the Atlantic Ocean every year.
Using reusable plastics is easier than it sounds. Even if you just remind yourself to bring a reusable bag each time you go shopping, you can save a ton of single-use plastic bags as well as animals. Here are some ways you can help reduce plastic in the ocean. Buy in bulk instead of buying separately and wasting plastic, avoid using single-use plastic straws, recycle, cook more instead of buying pre-made meals, and replace plastic Tupperware for glass or steel containers. There are lots of ways we can save the environment and even if you just do a little bit you can help poor sea creatures stay alive and reduce that 80% of plastic bags in our ocean.
If we rid ourselves of this drastic single use plastic, we can turn our world into something fantastic!
5/6 Pink work samples
5/6 Pink has been focusing on modelled reading techniques such as evaluating texts, literary devices and vocabulary, as well as our persuasive writing. Everyone has been working hard to turn in their tasks to the best of their ability. We have been enjoying sharing our work in Zoom and exploring patterns in Maths.

Title: Say No to single-use plastics! |
Sizzling Start Imagine a world of utter desolation, of garbage and waste, and dying species left, right and centre. The world would be an absolutely despicable place, which is why you have to stop it, you have to stand out and make single-use plastics banned and completely stopped, then help the world on a mass clean-up! |
PEEL paragraph 1 It cannot be denied that due to evidence ,which suggests pointedly that the world will soon be overrun by plastic in 2050, and due to what you can work out by your own means, it is very evident that we need to take a hand and stop plastics from overrunning species and from ruining land, waters and air. You may say that there is no plastic anywhere near me or that what I’m talking about is utter rubbish but on the other hand try to consider, ‘Have you ever actually seen evidence that your statements are correct?’ or ‘Have you actually read any or seen any documents or newspapers stating your opinion or mine?’ |
PEEL paragraph 2 I strongly believe it is necessary that everyone take a hand and stop this disgraceful and unreasonable amount of plastics ending up in our oceans! First of all, there are ways in which you can help, mainly by raising awareness about the seriousness and foulness of our situation. It is vital that you either make a poster, post tweets on social media or just generally talk to people about the serious issue that will and is occurring right at this very moment! Do you really want this planet to be overrun, killed and outrageously ruined by as simple as no one lifting a single finger to help planet Earth and its creatures from dying in a sea of waste! |
PEEL paragraph 3 We need you, planet Earth needs you, the sea creatures need you and even your fellow humans need you. You can do it, you can lift a finger and speak out in your effort against this calamity, you can talk to the government, you can talk to the prime minister and with passion and resilience you can prevail and ban single-use plastics. Think! You can have a fine in place with $200 for littering in the oceans or generally everywhere, but all you need to do is speak out, raise awareness and succeed! |
Conclusion This is your time to shine, speak out, ban all plastics and be the saviour of the Earth! Never forget that “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!” - Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland! |
ART
Art News
During learning from home art lessons students have been looking at a range of different artists. In previous weeks they have produced artwork inspired by Henri Matisse's cut outs, Andy Warhol repeat image paintings and Andy Goldsworthy natural form outcomes. Last week we looked at the work of Piet Mondrian and the students were inspired by the lines, shapes and primary colours he uses in his work. The student’s task was to design an item of clothing inspired by Mondrian, I had some fantastic designs handed in and have been so pleased with the quality of the work the students have been creating. We will continue looking at different artists during the learning from home lessons and I look forward to seeing the student’s wonderful creations! Keep up the great work everyone!

Congratulations to all the teachers, students and the SIPPS community for making our Book Week celebrations such a success.
We really appreciate all your support behind the scenes in assisting with the Bookface Competition and finding Book Week outfits for your children to wear to the Virtual Book Week zoom meetings. The teachers organised lots of exciting activities across the week with the highlight being the Book Week Zoom event which gave our students the opportunity to connect and interact with one another in a fun way and share the love of books and reading. As always the SIPPS staff went over and above sharing readings of their favourite books, dressing up and encouraging everyone to be involved.
Well done to everyone who entered the Bookface competition. Mrs Hayllar and I had a very difficult task selecting the winning entries.
Congratulations to:
ES1- Zoe, Nicholas, Henry
St 1- Laila, Daniel & Ava, Aria L

A thank you caffeine hit
Thank you for your generous ‘Shout a teacher a coffee’ donations. We would like to continue this complimentary coffee van service for the rest of the term, as a token of our appreciation for our SIPPS staff, especially right now during Covid. If you’d like to shout another few coffees, you can do so via QKR. It has put a huge smile on their faces. And has kept Adrian’s Coffee Van operational during this slow business period.
Uniform Shop
How good is our Uniform Shop service…. order on QKR and have it delivered straight to your child’s bag! And, did you know the Uniform Shop made over $10,000 profit for the P&C last year? This goes straight back into resources for your kids. This can happen because of our wonderful volunteers. However, we need a new Uniform Shop Manager from next year, as Mercy’s kids will be heading off to high school. This is a fun and rewarding role that you can make your own, usually once a fortnight, on the day of your choice. We would like to onboard and train someone up in Term 4 this year before she leaves. Contact us to learn more stivesparkpc@gmail.com
Healthy School Canteen Certification
Congratulations to Claire, our Canteen has been certified as a Great Choice Healthy School Canteen by the NSW Government. We look forward to getting back on site so our kids can make good use of it again!
