The Great Aussie Bush Camp – Year 5 & 6

The Mud Run

Crawling up a wooden wall, gripping the insides of the rubbery tires, finally landing in the freezing water that is up to my waist. The Mud Run is a course with super fun activities. Most of the time you are waist deep in muddy water but occasionally, you emerge and slide down a slide, swing through the mud or balance across countless balance beams. One of my favourite parts was when we entered the sunken ship. We had to crawl on our knees and elbows through a rectangular prism of green. We had to wait until all of our crew was in, then we could evacuate. Every time we moved onto a course it was more exciting than the last, this one was so hard: all of the 20 people in my group had to hold hands and duck under a metal bar. Putting your head in the cold water and the gooey mud is not an experience you would like but it's really fun once you come up. The one at the end was even better. 1 slide, 3 logs, shoulder deep mud. After we had finished the course we had to climb out of a prison and slide down a pretty big slide. I was so disappointed it was over but I had so many amazing memories I could keep forever.

Commando

Commando was one of the night activities. It was one of the best, most amazing activities that we did.The aim of the game is to find all 6 golden bricks and get them back to commando base. You had one life token and if the teachers spotted you, you had to give them your life token. Then you had to go back to base and do a dance to get another life token. If the teachers spotted you with a brick you say I got a brick and you go give it to the teacher at commando base.

Food

Sitting at the dining tables with a plateful of food in front of us chatting to our friends was one of the best feelings of camp. The Great Aussie bush camp served the most scrumptious food. When we got to the campsite they served us beef burgers with cheese and salad. The breakfasts were to die for. They consisted of toast, spaghetti, eggs, pancakes and cereal. The rest of the meals were hotdogs, two barbecues and snow cones. At afternoon tea they gave us fruit, muesli bars and snow cones. The Great Aussie Bush Camp had a good dietary plan as well including vegetarian, lactose, gluten, and more. We sat by the fire at night time and they gave us all kinds of warm supper such as chocolate milk with cookies and Marshmallows. They even let us make our own damper in bush craft, and topped it with dripping golden syrup. If thinking about all the heavenly camp food doesn't make you want to stuff your face then what does?

Sand Dunes

On the second day of our amazing camp we went to the massive sand dunes. It was extreme fun to climb up then slide, roll, run or jump down the giant sand dune. There was a contest for who could get the most sand in their shoes and the prize for winning was glory. People also slid on their bellies like a penguin and some kids went down incredibly fast. It was one of the best activities in camp!

Milkshakes in the county fair

Hannah and I made milkshakes in the county fair. The milkshake stall was selling the best milkshakes. Hannah worked in the milkshake stall and during break she told me business was going really well. So I tried the milkshakes and they were absolutely amazing. The flavours were: strawberry, caramel and chocolate. You can get two milkshakes which will cost you $10 dollars. If you come back, you can get one milkshake free. And her group made $885 (Fake money obviously) Hannah’s group came 1st place. Yay

Mud Run

OK, first of all we were commanded to be quiet when the instructor said “Attention!!!” and we would say “Sir Yes Sir!” and be quiet. Second, we had to climb down a tire ladder and Kalani and I got bored so we threw mud at each other. It was awesome. Next we had to swing on a swing to get to the other tire and if you fell in you would have to crawl all the way to the other side (Kalani fell on purpose). Next was a slide. We slid down it and fell in the mud, then we had to commando crawl through the mud (cold, cold, cold). Then we had to get really muddy for a photo. Kalani got the muddiest, he looked like a mud monster because you could see none of his skin, even on his face. Then we went through dark pipes to get to the end. After that we had a shower. The mud run was so awesome!!!

ORIENTEERING!

Orienteering is navigating with a compass. It's an important skill and also very fun. Before you start you have to look at your bearing and twist the compass until it reaches the correct number. Then you must twist around until the red pointer is in between the two green lines. Next you walk how many metres the sheet says to walk. You should end up at a tree with a symbol on it. Most people got it, some didn't.

Bush Craft

In bush craft we built mini shelters out of sticks we found in the woods and talked about what you need to survive in the bush. We saw two kangaroos and cooked a delicious bread called damper on coals until the damper turned golden and crispy. Once we had finished cooking the damper we took it off the stick and put maple syrup in the hole! It was really fun and we recommend you visit some time.

High ropes!

The high ropes were the highest of fun at the campgrounds! 5 or more minutes of obstacle courses in the air! The cool thing is, if you fall...you’ll stay in the air because you’re on a harness connected to the top. You may feel like you’re holding onto dear life because that rope is the only thing you’re holding onto, but trust me, it’s not! There are wires and other things to hold onto. The worst part of the activity is the first obstacle, there are ropes to hold onto but after the ropes are big balls hanging from the top, you have to kick or punch them out of the way quickly so you can get past! Especially if it’s your first time going on it, it can be pretty scary because you feel like you need things to hold onto or else you think you’ll fall. But like I said, you won’t!

Commando spot lighting

On the first night of camp, we participated in a fun night activity called commando spot lighting. What you do in this activity is…

Late at night you go to a bushland area and get set into teams of 5 or 6.The teachers are the spotters and if you get spotted you have to hand in your ‘life’ ( bottle cap). To get your life back you have to impress one of the staff members. The aim of the game is to get past the teachers and get a golden brick, if a teacher catches you and your team has a golden brick then they can't take your life and that means you are INVISIBLE!!!!!!!!!!

The Giant Swing

Soaring. Flying. Free. These feelings are what you feel in the exhilarating giant swing. Free falling through the great Aussie air is by far one of the best feelings you will ever get to experience. It is one of those events that is impossible to explain but we’ll give it a go. Imagine going up 15 meters in the air on your own command pulling a long red rope to then be flung over the crystal clear water screaming as you are falling deep into the peaceful air of the great Aussie bush camp. The first 1or 2 swings are probably the most scary but at the same time thrilling!!

Orientering

Our favourite activity was orienteering because we were in the Great Aussie Bush. Our fun leader Dan, put chocolates in the bush to make us find the secret treasure. Sadly none of us found the lost treasure, but we still had the best time of our lives! We found the whole code but we had to look for a deep hole to get the chocolates. We didn’t find anything but it was still fun because we saw a kangaroo on the way back to the campsite. I thought we were going to get lost in the thick bush. The funniest bit of orienteering was having fun with my friends and solving things.

There was a big bouncy castle inside the hall. The prices were $10 for 5 minutes or $65 for unlimited access.

Commando

Great Aussie Bush Camp was one of the best experiences ever. On the first night we played commando/spotlight. Firstly we got into groups and I got all my friends in mine. To play, every group got one life token to share. Then the whole stage waited for the teachers to go into the woods. Then all of the groups went into the woods. We had to find a metal framed tent which one of the leaders was guarding. Each of the groups had to try to get to the tent without being spotted by the teachers. If we did make it to the tent we got to swap our life token for a piece of gold. Nobody really ended up winning the game but it was definitely one of the best things that happened at the great Aussie Bush Camp.

Overall

Everyone had so much fun but the two best things were the giant swing and the mud run. The mud run was really squelchy and cold. The giant swing was scary and stomach curdling. Most people said orienteering was hard but group 1 had an amazing time. Sadly no one found the hidden chocolate. Overall it was exciting at the Great Aussie Bush Camp and everyone had a fantastic time. Beatrix

Music

In music this term Stage 2 and Stage 3 have been improvising and exploring musical ideas based on rhythmic and melodic patterns. They have been using Song Maker in Chrome Music lab to create their own compositions by collaborating with a partner. Students have created a wide variety of songs based on their favourite genre of music, a they enjoy song, their knowledge of music notes and chords or simply using the colours of the notes in Song Maker to create an ostinato that looks like a piece of art. Stage 2 and 3 have been very creative.

Kindergarten and Stage 1 have been exploring a number of chants and rhymes this term. We have been using body percussion and percussion instruments to add accompaniment to our singing. Students have also created a soundscape for Goldilocks and the Three Bears which focused on building sounds for these familiar characters and creating different moods and humour to enhance our reading of the story. This week we turned the story into a rap, focusing on beat and story telling with some body percussion.
