Principal’s Message

Welcome Back to Term 2

Lovely to see so many parents and students each morning in school and at the gate now that we have returned for Term 2.

Please remember to prioritise safety by using the pedestrian crossing when parking on the opposite side of Acron Road. There is limited ‘Kiss and Drop’ space so if you are leaving your car, please be aware that there are other areas for parking your car and walking your child into school. It is lovely to see many of our students who ride their bikes, step off the bike and walk it into the school so sensibly.

Staff professional learning

It has been a busy start to Term 2 for staff who have been participating in professional learning in the areas of reading and mathematics.

On the Staff Development Day, teachers were implementing current research in the Scarborough’s Reading Rope model into their class reading programs for this term. This prioritises essential skills in reading which include: background knowledge, vocabulary, language structures, verbal reasoning and literacy knowledge to integrate student comprehension skills.

Staff are participating in a range of professional learning in mathematics with Mrs Hayllar and Mrs Foley, who is the mathematical association of NSW Primary Teaching Consultant. The staff are implementing instructional routines to engage students in their learning: Number Talks and Rich Tasks and Differentiation are key focus areas for development and implementation this semester.

Research demonstrates that there are key principles for effective teaching of mathematics which include:

  1. Articulating goals
  2. Making connections
  3. Fostering engagement
  4. Differentiating challenges
  5. Structuring lessons
  6. Promoting fluency and transfer

The 2021 to 2024 school plan has a significant focus on the DoE What Works Best strategies in reading and mathematics.

In Term 2 we transition to Winter uniform with all students in correct Winter uniform to start Week 3. Please ensure your child is dressed in school uniform each day. Remember to label all clothing and encourage your child to look after their clothing. The school lost property bin is outside the office and there is also an OOSH lost property bin. Sometimes students leave articles of clothing in the playground and they are placed into the OOSH bin. Please feel free to check both bins if your child has lost an item.

Kindergarten

Welcome back! The students appear well-rested and ready to leap into Term 2! Our phonics program continues and new sounds will be updated and sent home each week. A reminder that students need to bring in their Home Reader folders in order to take new books home.

In mathematics, we will be focusing on whole number, engaging in activities including counting forward and backwards, and recalling numbers before and after a given number. Students have started learning to log on to our school laptops and will be utilising this technology more frequently this term. We are excited to also start coding this term on a Monday afternoon.

Sport will continue to be Tuesday (Got Game) and Friday ( school sport). A reminder for library bags to be sent in on a Friday for students to borrow books. We are both excited to see the growth and learning that will take place this term.

Stage 1 - Year 1 and Year 2

Welcome back to Term Two. We are happy to see our Year One and Two students so rested and ready to learn. This term, we are continuing with our phonics program, Read Write Inc. The spelling words the children have for homework each week are based around the sounds they are learning in class. Your children will bring their homework home on a Monday and it is due back on a Friday. There are always some spelling activities and a Mathematics activity to complete. Please encourage your child to take responsibility for putting their own homework in their bag and placing it into the homework box on a Friday morning and of course bringing their home reading back on the correct day to change their readers.

We are incorporating the use of laptops and iPads within our literacy and numeracy programs this term, which had been met with lots of excitement by the children. The use of IT helps class teacher’s to individualize learning for your child and the children are always engaged with their learning. Our coding lessons with Scope IT begin in Week 2 on a Monday as well.

Sports days are still Tuesdays (Got Game) and Fridays (class sport), your child needs to be in their sports uniform on these days. Art and Library remain on a Friday. Please make sure your child returns their library books and brings their library bag each week.

We look forward to a wonderful term of learning.

Aliy Husband (1/2 emerald) and Louise Underhill K/1T
