Principal’s Message

Sushi and Slushy Day

A delicious lunch was provided to students on ‘Sushi and Slushy Day’ last Tuesday. Happy students participated in the healthy home-made lunch. Thank you to the volunteers, who although limited in numbers, were able to socially distance and follow the strict guidelines to make this such a success for SIPPS students. A special thank you to Sony for going ‘above and beyond’ in co-ordinating and organising to make this event a great success.

2020 SIPPS Spectacular planning

The SIPPS dance spectacular has been postponed to mid Term 4 in the hope that we may be able to present class dances to parents. New and Kindergarten parents may not be aware that the annual event is usually planned for the end of Term 3.

Should the restrictions at that time impact the presentation, staff will video the class presentation and arrange for it to be available to parents via the Google Classroom platform which was utilised during Education Week 2020.

Updated Health Guidelines for schools - August 19th

As you would be aware from my letter to all families last week, new guidelines were released to all NSW schools. Schools are operating full time while actively following health advice.

Winter PSSA for Ku-ring-gai Zone has been cancelled for 2020. Parents who have paid for Winter PSSA travel costs will have a $100 credit (per PSSA student) on their account which will be applied to Term 4 fees. Parents who have not paid the Term 3 Statement of account will be emailed a replacement Statement wih the PSSA fee removed.

This is a result of limits to numbers of people at a venue and equity. PSSA Summer sport will be advised in Term 4 dependent upon the guidelines at that time.

Students should be at school unless:

  • they have a medical certificate which states that they are unable to return to school due to an ongoing medical condition and the expected timeframe
  • they are currently unwell.
  • if students exhibit any Covid 19 symptoms they need to be tested and a negative Covid-19 test result must be uploaded into SchoolZine using the Absentee Form before students may return to school. Covid 19 clinics can be found via the website https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/how-to-protect-yourself-and-others/clinics

Writing at SIPPS

Last term teacher professional learning included staff from Terry Hill PS and SIPPS working together to consistently judge student writing prior to reporting at the end of Semester 1.

In Weeks 1 to 5 in Term 3, the writing focus for explicit teaching has been sentence structure and cohesion. All students have been learning about different types of sentences and how to create cohesion between sentences in imaginative or informative texts.

Sports Trolley

The sports trolley is back! Students on a Tuesday are able to borrow sports equipment to use at lunchtimes. All items are borrowed and sanitised upon their return in readiness for the following week.

Thank you to Amelia and Aleksija for their organisation and initiative.

Enrolments 2020 – Note to all parents

Each year all NSW Public Schools are asked in August to indicate their anticipated enrolments for the following school year. This means parents need to inform the school that their child will or will not be returning to St Ives Park Public school in 2021.

This year all parents were again asked to indicate if their child will be returning to SIPPS in 2020.

All families are asked to return their child/ren’s enrolment 2020 slip. This is vitally important for the school to be able to identify numbers of student for 2020. We receive our teacher allocation according to the numbers of students who are enrolled in our school. Please return the notes by 25th September, 2020.

New school planning cycle

Please join in the next P&C meeting for an update regarding the new planning cycle.

Staff and the school leadership team are receiving training in the new planning cycle. There is a focus on core curriculum, teaching, learning and assessment to support student growth and attainment.

Before the end of the school year, there will be opportunities for parents and carers to participate in consultation for the new school plan. If you are particularly interested please keep an eye out for further information in each newsletter.

Staff are reviewing their current practices to start planning for the next school cycle. This year fewer programs have been put in place and sadly parents have not been offered information evenings to engage with school programs.

We are accepting enrolments for Kindergarten students for 2021. We would normally offer school tours throughout Term 3, however, all Kindergarten orientation activities are on hold.

Stay safe and well,
Caroline English

Inspiring & Nurturing Successful Lifelong Learners

EAL/D Program

The English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D) program at SIPPS is a specialist program for students whose first language is a language or dialect other than English. EAL/D students require specific support to build the English language skills needed to access the general curriculum, in addition to learning area-specific language structures and vocabulary.

At SIPPS we use a variety of assessments to determine those students who require additional support to assist them to develop proficiency in English. Our EAL/D students already speak one or more languages or dialects other than English. This language knowledge is an advantage when learning an additional language and, along with their life experiences and diverse cultural knowledge, provides learners with resources upon which to build their English language, literacy and educational development

At SIPPS we provide learning experiences that reflect the identities and experiences of all students in the classroom. Our EAL/D students are provided with additional support through small group withdrawal or assistance in class. All teaching is tailored to meet individual learning needs to assist our EAL/D students to be successful learners.

Stage 2 News

Education Week is always a fun time to share with you a snapshot of your children’s learning. This year has seen many unique challenges and opportunities for you to have an insight into the learning journey of your children. We hope you enjoyed the Marblelympics photos on Facebook and the slideshow on Google Classroom. The children had a lot of fun designing and testing their events.

In writing this term, Stage 2 have been focusing on sentence structure and the flow of their narrative writing. Students have been doing a variety of activities individually and in groups. For the remainder of the term, we will be moving our focus towards the structure of persuasive texts and using punctuation to organise our ideas. We are also learning to proofread our peers’ writing and give ‘friendly feedback’.
