Principal’s Message

Dear parents and carers,

Education Week 2020 – Learning Together

This week concludes Semester 1 for 2020, which has had many adventures for families, students and teachers alike. The changed practices implemented to support students learning from home, has provided parents with a deeper knowledge of the curriculum students access at school.

This year, Education Week will run from Monday 3 August to Friday 7 August 2020 and the theme is Learning together. It's a theme that reflects an incredible year for NSW public school students, staff and parents, and the partnerships that have been strengthened in response.

This Education Week, we embrace the whole NSW public education community, highlighting the achievements of local schools and the role of public schools as the cornerstone of their communities.

Join the DoE for #EdWeek20 as we celebrate learning together with our students, parents, teachers, schools and the community. Specific SIPPS information will be provided in our Week 2 newsletter on 27th July. We will provide information regarding parent virtual participation unless the health guidelines change in the next four weeks.

Reporting

Just a reminder that reports will come home to families on Wednesday August 12th, 2020 which is the extended timeline I mentioned in previous newsletters. These reports are a different format and a shorter report than the traditional reports. Students and teachers have been working together at school identifying student strengths and areas for development in Semester 2.

Scope IT

Term 3 sees the beginning of a K-6 coding program provided by Scope It. Scope It have provided programs in many northern Sydney schools for the past 5 years. This program will focus on the digital problem solving, metalanguage and coding skills which are part of the Digital Technologies elements in the Science and Technology K-10 syllabus. The focus is on design process, solution building, collaboration and digital systems. Further information can be accessed here at the link below. This program is in place of the Young Engineers program and fees will be included in the Term 3 fees. We are now able to offer this program as external curriculum providers have been approved in schools as from 15th June 2020.

Term 3 Guidelines

Student drop off and collection from school gates

Important to remember that parent/carer school pick up and drop off remains in place and there are no changes. Please remember that parents until further notice are required to drop off and collect their children at the gate and remain outside the school grounds. Thank you to all our parents who have followed the social distancing requirements during drop off and collection. We look forward to when we are able to support increased access to the school site.

In Term 3 a range of activities will resume for students at school. The inter-school sport PSSA will resume for Winter sport from Week 2. Students will be advised of teams after trials with Miss Emerson and Mr Dimmers.

Special Religious Education and Ethics classes will resume in Term 3 and providers have been advised.

Community Use contract holders will be able to resume classes once their compliance responsibilities have been fulfilled. Each of these providers are required to fulfil their association compliance and the DoE compliance. Dance is ready for a Term 3 start which is great news for all our dancers.

Kindergarten 2021

We are accepting enrolments for Kindergarten students for 2021. We would normally offer school tours throughout Term 2, however, we will offer these in Term 3 when restrictions ease.

In Term 3, please look out for Pearls from the Park in the Newsletter and on the school Face Book page. As we are unable to conduct school tours at present we will provide a virtual guided tour at SIPPS via images. Please let your family and friends know if they have young children ready to start school in 2021.

School Planning – School Excellence in Action

Detail of the new planning cycle will be released to all teachers in NSW on the Staff Development Day 20th July, 2020 via Live Stream video link.

All Principals will be trained in the new planning procedures in July and August 2020. The current School Plan 2018 to 2020 will conclude this year. I will keep our community informed regarding the planning process and new school directions via The Patter. Stay tuned!

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) – Information for parents and carers.

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

  • year of schooling
  • category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
  • level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

Students may be provided with individual scaffolds within their class with their teacher, an SLSO or the Learning and Support Teacher. Students may also receive supplementary support in small groups with the Learning and Support Teacher. The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability. The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process.

Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal at the link below.

Happy holidays

I’d like to thank our SIPPS families and staff for working together so creatively throughout Semester 1. The first half of the year has enabled everyone to practise divergent thinking and create solutions. Together we really are braver and stronger than we think!

Wishing all SIPPS families a very happy two week holiday break. For those families who are planning a holiday away from home, I wish you a safe journey and I hope you enjoy the change of scenery. Hopefully all our families are able to have a more joyous and fun filled July holiday break with family and friends.

Don’t forget the ongoing social distancing requirements.

Safe holidays and I’m looking forward to a delightful Term 3 together.

Warm wishes,
Caroline English
Principal

Bandemonium – Band News

Band recommenced this week at SIPPS, with one excited conductor and three fabulous tutors. It was amazing to hear how some children had participated in private lessons and zoom band over the lockdown. Some children performed solos for me which was incredible.

Junior band students are currently working on Exercises in Essential elements 5 - 18 and next week I will be handing out their first concert band piece to practice over the holidays. If you need assistance with some lessons, please call me and I will give you a contact number a tutor.

Senior band children received two New band pieces 'Spy Trek and Dragon Slayer" as well as mastering the Avengers !

Next week - We will be having band and end of term games. Every child will receive a little prize. So if you missed this week, it would be fabulous to see you before the end of term.

YEAR 2 - it's not far off to consider Band for 2021 and which instrument you should play. If you would like to come along and listen to a band practice next term you are most welcome.
