Term 3

Week 4

Education Week: Every Student, Every Voice

Community, students and staff had a wonderful morning last Thursday, with almost 100 members of our school community, parents and grandparents, attending our Education Week Celebration in the hall and then visiting classrooms. There were many pieces of artwork displayed in the art room. Classes K to 2 demonstrated and discussed their mathematics learning with the families. Stage 2 students enticed their visitors to assist in bridge building in classrooms. Stage 3 guests were provided with a geographical World Tour as senior students showcased their learning.

Thank you to all our visitors who attended the Education Week event. We look forward to welcoming parents, grandparents and guests to the Book Week parade on 22nd August under the COLA.

Quick Quiz: Do you know in which country Chupa Chups were created?

Stage Coach continues

Our Year 6 students continue to visit St Ives High School for their high school sessions. Thank you to Miss Emerson and Mrs Woodwell who are working closely with Mrs McGurgin to facilitate these opportunities.

Earn and Learn Stickers

Many families and friends of SIPPS have kindly supported our school throughout the Woolworths’ Earn and Learn promotion. This has enabled our school to earn 32000+ points. As the school is currently focussing on Mathematics teaching and learning for students, we have been able to purchase a wide range of resources for all classes K-6 to support this core curriculum area. In fact every single point earnt has been expended!

An enormous thank you to every member of the SIPPS Community who donated their stickers to our school.

Reminder: SIPPS Jubilee Week events include:

Guests and Visitors: Open afternoon 1:30 – 3:00pm Wednesday 4th September.
SIPPS students: Disco Friday the 6th September.

Education Week

Wow! What a turnout! Thank you to all of the parents and carers who came to see the students perform and enjoyed seeing their learning in the classrooms. I hope that you all had a wonderful time. We have such a dearth of talent, be it in creative arts, or in the classroom setting. It is so pleasing to see.

I think you’ll agree that the students’ behaviour was impeccable and they conducted themselves beautifully throughout the morning. Well done to all!

Kind Regards, N. Mills & K. Woodwell

SANDPIT CREATIONS

Students have been busy making special sculptures in the sandpit. What fabulous creations

3/4 Red

In 3/4 Red this term, we have been focusing on two ideas; having a growth mindset in all areas and valuing ourselves and others.

Students have been setting goals for themselves to achieve this term using the SMART Framework. This means our goals are;

S – Specific
M – Measureable
A – Achievable
R – Realistic
T – Time Frame

Here are a few of our student examples of goals they have set for themselves…

Also in 3/4 Red, we are learning to value ourselves by having pride in the people we are. Each of us chose our favourite thing about ourselves to write about and the reasons why we chose it. Here are some examples of why we are such amazing people;

Games trolley
School Newsletter

Hi my name is Julia. I’m in year six and I started the Games Trolley last term. Over the last term I have been happy with my idea to start the Games Trolley, I found that not only are the students having fun playing with their friends, they are also making lots of new friends! We had a lot of laughs and the students have started to bond more with people they wouldn’t normally play with!

In the first week of term three I brought out a card game and a stacking game. The stacking game was one of the kid’s favourites, not only does this game give joy but it needs a lot of concentration and cooperation.

Starting the Games Trolley was not easy. I chose 2 days for the games trolley to be available. It could not be on Wednesday because of choir, so I picked Monday and Thursday. We needed to order the games and wait for them to arrive. As I’m in year six I’m not here next year. So as to get someone who is willing enough to take on the job I wrote down the people who are coming so that the teachers know who is enjoying coming and playing the games. I got to see new faces and those people kept coming back and so I am getting to get to know them better! The main purpose of starting the Games Trolley was for the students to make new friends.

Thank you for reading.

Library

This term, I am thrilled to be taking Library as some very exciting events are happening in the Library. Our focus is on the Children’s Book Council Awards (CBCA) Book Week theme “Reading is my Secret Power”.

Book week preparation is well underway and we are looking forward to some really stimulating library lessons based on the CBCA shortlisted Book Week finalists.

The official CBCA Book Week will be celebrated in Week 5 of term. We will be having a Book Parade where students are asked to dress up as a character from a book on Thursday 22nd August.

K-2 will be having a Book Week performance incursion from Big Dreams on Thursday 29th August and on Friday 23rd of August Stage 2 and 3 will have an Author visit from Mick Elliot!

Learning support

Dear School Community

We are all settling in to our Term 3 routines. In Learning and Support this term there are some new directions.

The School Counsellor, Jessica Cheok, and I will be starting the first Social Skills program using an evidence based program to teach young people social and emotional intelligence. Invitations will go home to families this week. We hope it will be a program that we will roll out to other year levels over next year as well.

This term I will be providing explicit intervention for some Stage 2 students identified through teacher assessment.

The aim of direct intervention as provided by the Learning and Support Team is to improve the skills, knowledge and application of student’s literacy and numeracy.

We have had some great gains from Semester 1, with some students in K – 2 making the leaps and bounds we were hoping for.

With the hard work of staff and students we hope to see gains in the literacy and numeracy results of those students targeted this term.

Support for early reading is always a priority. If there are any interested parents or community members who would like to offer their time to support our young readers in the morning session please contact me.
