Principal’s Message
Term 3
Welcome back to Term 3.
I sincerely hope all our students and families had a lovely holiday whether you stayed nearby or were enjoying time travelling.
Term 3 is going to be BIG here at St Ives Park Public School. We all love to have our birthday and now the school will have it’s 50th Birthday this term. Many of our parents are working very hard behind the scenes to organise this event and I would like to thank them in advance. We have a dedicated band of parents who really do a wonderful job on behalf of our school!
Birthday events will include:
Guests and Visitors: Open afternoon 1:30 – 3:00pm Wednesday 4th September.
SIPPS students: Disco Friday the 6th September.
Adults: Saturday evening 7th September.
Almost every week there are major events this term. Our community will be in and out of the school even more than normal and I would like to encourage you to come along to as many events as you are able to attend.
Education Week this year is focused on Every Student: Every Voice and we will have an open morning for our parents on the 8th August. There is more information in this newsletter, please refer to this information for the exact details.
Our Year 6 students went to St Ives High School for their first taste of High School and the Stage Coach Program. Thank you to Miss Emerson and Mrs Woodwell who are working closely with Tania McGurgan.
Attendance
If a child misses as little as 8 days in a school term, by the end of primary school they’ll have missed over a year of school. This is why parents and carers of children of compulsory school age are responsible for ensuring their child attends school every day. Once children commence school their attendance is monitored.
On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:
- being sick, or having an infectious disease
- having an unavoidable medical appointment
- being required to attend a recognised religious holiday
- exceptional or urgent family circumstance (e.g. attending a funeral)
Following an absence from school you must ensure that within 7 days you provide your child’s school with a verbal or written explanation for the absence. However, if the school has not received an explanation from you within 2 days, the school may contact you to discuss the absence.
Principals may request medical certificates or other documentation when frequent or long term absences are explained as being due to illness. Principals may also seek parental permission to speak with medical specialists to obtain information to collaboratively develop a health care plan to support your child. If the request is denied, the principal can record the absences as unjustified.
Arriving at school and class on time:
- Ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day
- Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine
- Give students time to greet their friends before class
- Reduces classroom disruption
Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents.

Teacher Professional Learning at SIPPS
Mathematics
Late last term our K-4 teachers started training in a Mathematics program entitled “TEN: Targeted Early Numeracy” with staff from other schools. This program focuses on the Number strand and enables teachers to monitor student progress informally. We will also have Laurinda Lomas joining our staff each Tuesday to engage with the 3-6 teachers to inform their Mathematics practice. Laurinda is a highly accomplished professional leader in the area of Mathematics who will lead the staff in using recent research and practice. These two projects will continue throughout Semester Two this year.
Compliance
The NSW Educational Standards Authority: NESA are continuing to change the requirements in schools across all sectors. NESA is the over-arching curriculum for NSW, which guides and inspects schools across all sectors, Departmental, Catholic and Independent school in NSW. This week our staff participated in professional learning regarding some of the requirements set by NESA to enable our Departmental and NESA compliance.
Christ Church St Ives – Sunday Morning Family Church
Pastor James and his Team from Christ Church St Ives have relocated to St Ives Park Public School whilst building works are under way at their usual abode. Their first congregation was yesterday. They will meet each week between 8am and 12pm and have access to the hall, canteen, several classrooms and the library.
