May PBL Focus
Principal’s Message
What a lovely welcome I have had to St Ives Park Public School! Thank you to our lovely students who have introduced yourselves and to the many parents whom I have already met. Thank you to the P&C for your warm welcome last Wednesday evening.
As a passionate leader and teacher, with more than 25 years experience, I am really looking forward to working with our St Ives Park students as they grow and learn and engaging with our school community and staff.
Assessment and Reporting
Teachers are working together to monitor student progress and assess student learning against NSW syllabus outcomes. This information will be utilised to develop reports which will go home to families on Tuesday 2nd July 2019. Assessments provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding of concepts and provides evidence for future learning plans.
Parent Information Evening: A Mental Health Toolbox for Parents of young children
Collett Smart, trained psychologist, teacher and author of They’ll Be Okay will be holding a parent information session at St Ives Park Public School from 6:30 – 8:00 pm on Tuesday June 18th.
In her session she will share important information for all parents in supporting children through many childhood and teen challenges. Specifically she will discuss:
- The signs and symptoms of anxiety and depression in children
- Recognising the triggers for anxiety in young people
- Enhancing wellbeing (through mental, physical and social resilience factors)
- How to practically support anxious kids at school
- Supporting children with friends of family with mental health concerns
Brochures will come home to all families. PLEASE RSVP on the attached note by Wednesday 12th June.
National Assessment Plan: Literacy and Numeracy
Students in Year 3 and Year 5 participated in NAPLAN testing last week in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy. The writing test focus was a Narrative with the topic of ‘The Gate’. Parents and schools will receive written feedback from mid-August. NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. It is important to remember that NAPLAN is not about passing or failing, rather to assess learning progress at a point in time.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
In PBL students are focusing on the value of working towards their Personal Best. Our school expectation states: Strive to achieve your personal best in every area; think positively, challenge yourself and be resilient. While these may sound easy, it can at times take real persistence to achieve your personal best as you strive to improve in areas which are a challenge. Teachers and students will be talking about Personal Best with their classes and implementing activities to reinforce the school value.
Acting Principal – Jodie Sheehy
Thank you to Ms Jodie Sheehy for her ongoing work with students, staff and our community in her roles as Acting Principal and Assistant Principal. Ms Sheehy has supported St Ives Park Public School in many ways in her teaching and leading roles while at this school. Ms Sheehy has taken an Instructional Leader role at Gymea Bay Public School for the remainder of 2019.
School Uniform
As the weather is becoming cooler, it is now expected that all students at St Ives Park will be wearing their winter school uniform each day. Please be aware that the girls’ unisex uniform (long green pants, white long sleeved shirt and tie) are available through the uniform shop. The uniform shop can be contacted through the For Parents tab on the school website.

School Pedestrian Crossing
At the end of last year we got our new crossing installed to keep us safe when crossing the road before and after school, as well as on the weekend.
We have had people in the community notice that some students are not using this crossing. If your child is going down Woodbury Road (towards Brigidine College) they MUST use the crossing. Some of the students are trying to cross the road at the Woodbury Road/Acron Road intersection which is unsafe, especially during drop-off and pick-up times, which is when many of our students are either walking to or from home.
Teachers have spoken to their classes, however if your child goes this way to or from school, we ask if you could also have a talk with them about using this crossing. We want everyone to stay safe!

New Sports Equipment
A huge thank you to the P and C for their generous donation towards new sports equipment for Kindergarten, Year 1 and 2. The students in Stage 1 had a wonderful time on Friday having the honour of testing out the new equipment. The children had fun throwing foam frisbees, bouncing balls on hand trampolines, throwing rugby balls and catching balls in a scoop amongst other things.
