Principal’s Message

Hello everyone!

Welcome back to school for Term 2. I hope you all had a relaxing break. I hear the weather was glorious, which is very unusual for an Easter holiday. It must have been because I was away and couldn’t enjoy it.

There are a lot of very exciting things happening during Term 2. Ms English, the new Principal at SIPPS will be starting here on Monday the 13th of May. I’m sure you will all give her a very big welcome. Stage 2 and Stage 3 have camp during this term. Stage 2 at the ZoosnooZ and Stage 3 are off to The Great Aussie Bush Camp (my favourite).

We held our school ANZAC ceremony last Thursday and I was really impressed with the presentation by our school leaders and by the respectful behaviour of all of the students at SIPPS. I was so proud of the way they conducted themselves.

Thank you to the families that have paid their Term 1 invoices. Term 2 invoices will be sent out within the next few weeks.

Board Games at Lunch

This week we introduced a new lunch time activity. We have purchased a number of board games and replaced the old benches in the gazebo with a new table and benches. This is so that the students can have the opportunity to play games at lunch time. The games will be rotated throughout the weeks so that there are different games available from week to week. Each Monday and Thursday at lunch time there will be 2 games that students can choose to play. It provides an opportunity for quiet play and is also a way to learn social skills such as turn taking and communication skills.

Opportunity Classes – Year 5

Opportunity classes cater for highly achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These classes help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.

Applications for opportunity class placement are considered mainly on the combined results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test and school assessments. The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held on Wednesday 31 July 2019.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2020, you need to apply soon. This must be completed through the online application process.

The application website opens on Tuesday 30 April 2019 and closes on Friday 17 May 2019. No late applications will be accepted. You must submit only ONE application for each student.

The application website and relevant dates are displayed below for those students applying for Year 5 entry to an opportunity class for 2020.

This is my last week as Acting Principal at SIPPS and I wanted to thank everyone for your support this year. I have enjoyed my time in “the big chair”. I have truly appreciated the feedback from parents thanking me for the work I have done and telling me how much of a difference I have made at SIPPS in 2019. SIPPS really is a very special place to be because of the students, staff and parents.

Best wishes always

Jodie

Inspiring & Nurturing
Successful Lifelong Learners

On Thursday, St Ives Park commemorated Anzac Day with a special assembly. Students learnt about the meaning of Anzac Day and about some of the symbols that represent it, such as the poppy. Luca and Summer did a fabulous job leading the event.

Saoirse and Elizabeth came in their Girl Guide uniforms and directed the class representatives where to put their posies of flowers as they represented the wreaths traditionally placed in remembrance.

Also a special thank you to Lana and Laura for reciting In Flanders Field and The Ode of Remembrance.

ART

What we worked on towards the end of Term 1

The year 1's, 2's, 3's and 4's worked on a group project to decorate our large class fish.

Sea Life had been the theme during first term and each child had the opportunity to decorate a scale, bubble, tail stripe or fin triangle, with lots of students choosing to decorate more than one!!

The students were very pleased with their completed fish and excited to see their work all together on the classroom wall!!

Notes from the Office

Woolworths Earn & Learn 2019

Woolworths Earn & Learn is back and it is now easier than ever to earn valuable equipment for your primary school, secondary school or Early Learning Centre. In our last campaign, more than 16,000 schools and Early Learning Centres benefited from the program, boosting supplies in classrooms, libraries, music rooms, gymnasiums and science labs.

It's simple to participate. From Wednesday 1st May and Tuesday 25th June 2019 or while stock lasts, when your staff and parents shop at Woolworths they can collect Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers from the checkout operator, via team members at the self service checkout or through an online order and place them on a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet. There will be one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco, and gift cards). Once completed, simply place the Sticker Sheet in the Collection Box, either at your school or at your local Woolworths.

There is a sticker box located in the school office and there is one at St Ives Woolworths.

CHESS!!

Learn to be a chess champion! Coaching for students at St Ives Park Public School is held on Thursdays from 1:00pm to 1:50pm, starting on 2 May 2019.

Learning and playing chess helps children develop their logical thinking and problem solving skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment.

Activities include group lessons on a demonstration chess board or interactive whiteboard, puzzle solving and fun practice games

Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, or by displaying skills and positive qualities, which all good chess players strive to develop.

If your child is interested in taking part, you can collect an enrolment form from the school office, or email enrol@sydneyacademyofchess.com.au for a copy.

For all enquiries, please contact Sydney Academy of Chess on (02) 9745 1170.

Reading Program

A big hello to all parents and friends of St Ives Park Public School. I am so happy to be back working with the teachers, parents and students of our great school.

I would like to take this opportunity to encourage parents and friends of the school community who have some spare time, to consider becoming a volunteer reading tutor for our students in Years 1 and 2.

As with all activities that involve working with students you will need to complete an Appendix 5 – Declaration for volunteers and non child related contractors and lodge it at the school office. Please click on the link below or ask for one at the school office.

100 points of Identity are required – please see the link below for a list of documents that may be provided. Your ID and your form need to be lodged at the school office where it will be processed.

This program involves helping at the school for 1 or 2 hours of a morning. You will receive training on what you will be required to do with the students during these support sessions.

If you can help, please fill out the form below and return to the school office.

Thank you.
