April PBL Focus

I have been so proud of every student this term in how they have shown #Respect, #Responsibility and #Personal Best. What a fantastic school St Ives Park Public School is.

Principal’s Message

WOW! What a weekend! The election sausage sizzle and the camp out! Thank you so much to the families who gave up their time on Saturday to help out at the BBQ fundraiser. It was fantastic to spend some time catching up with parents and students.

What can I say about the Camp Out? Such a fantastic idea. Thank you to the organisers for all your hard work. The students were very excited in the week leading up to the camp out and I loved hearing all about who they were camping with and what they were sleeping in. I certainly enjoyed my sausage sandwich dinner and joining in for the movie. But I still think the best thing of all was the totally unplanned light show and water park. We are certainly not going to let a “little” rain stop us! The SIPPS spirit forged on - chairs were moved, pants rolled up, shoes kicked off and the fun continued.

SIPPS is turning 50!

Thank you so much to Magdalena (Marcel’s mum) for designing our 50th Anniversary logo. We really appreciate the time and effort you have put into it. We LOVE it! You will be seeing this wonderful logo around the school quite a lot throughout the year as we take many opportunities to celebrate this SIPPS milestone.

Parent and teacher committees have been brainstorming what exciting events we can hold, and the students are all so excited to be planning their celebration disco. Wait until they hear about the time capsule!

If you would like to be involved in helping to organise the festivities, contact the P&C and let them know. If you know anyone who used to come to school here at SIPPS ask them to contact us if they have any memorabilia they are happy for us to borrow. Most importantly keep an eye out for what is coming up so that you can join in the fun!

Measles- A health alert has been issued by the Department of Health regarding measles.

Measles is a highly infectious viral illness which is spread easily through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes, or breathes. The virus can survive in the air for short periods of time, so simply being in the same room as someone who is infectious with measles can result in infection if you are not immune.

People are susceptible to measles if they have never had measles, or have not received two doses of measles vaccine. People with weakened immune systems (e.g., people who are receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy for cancer or people who take high-dose steroid medications), may also be susceptible, even if they have been vaccinated in the past.

Please read the PDF on Measles for more information

Parent Teacher Interviews

Many parents have attended interviews with class teachers last week and they will continue this week. I have heard a lot of positive feedback about the process and I’m happy to see so many parents taking advantage of this opportunity. Thank you to the staff members who have made themselves available during this time.

Easter Hat Parade, Grandfriends’ Day & Book Fair

A reminder about our Easter Hat Parade and Grandfriends’ day coming up in week 11. Don’t forget The Book Fair will be running in the Library all day for you to purchase books, this is another great fundraiser for the school – as well as a chance to encourage your child to enjoy reading a new book.

SAILS playground

This is the last newsletter before the end of Term 1. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all for being so supportive of me during my time as Acting Principal. I have enjoyed my time leading this fantastic school and listening to all the views of the community and the students. I hope you all have a fabulous break. Teachers return on Monday 29th April for a staff Development Day. Students return on Tuesday 30th April.

Inspiring & Nurturing Successful Lifelong Learners

Volleyball

Some of our students have been participating in volleyball activities on Fridays mornings. They have been working on skill development and playing the game. Last week 1/2 Red had a “ball”.

This week we’re building a Circus Carousel and using this model to learn about coding efficiency-

  • Not duplicating commands
  • Using the computer resources efficiently (memory, processing power)
  • Streamlining the code to make processing as fast as possible

All of this with minimum risk to the business or operating environment

STEM learnings:

  • Speed increasing belt transmission (larger drive pulley driving smaller driven pulley)
  • Centrifugal force
  • Add to / subtract from display
  • Display input add-on

Coding storybook:

Using an Agile methodology to develop their software solution, students had to use coding efficiency principles to increase and decrease the speed of the carousel, i.e. develop the code without repeating any coding commands.

Congratulations to all the students who wore purple on Tuesday and donated money to Epilepsy Australia. SIPPS raised $250. A fantastic effort! This special day was help to help raise awareness of epilepsy within our school community, and to raise funds to support the thousands of Australians around the country affected by the condition. I am so upset that I missed the festivities due to my attendance at a Professional Learning event. Of all people – I really should not have missed out on PURPLE DAY! I will have to have my own day of purpleness later on in the year.

BY THE LIGHT OF THE MOON OPERA

In week seven, as part of the Music program, SIPPS students were treated to a performance by Oz Opera entitled “By the light of the moon”. The students were enthralled by the colourful costumes and sets and in awe of the performers’ acting and singing talents.

Stage three students were asked to write a review of the performance and a few examples can be seen below:

The singing was amazing, lots of beautiful sounds. The costumes were very creative and well designed. I could tell they were practising a lot. They put a lot of hard work into it and that’s how it was so good. (Sabrina)

The costumes were quite unique, but cool! Their acting was so good and I really liked the singing. The scenery matched the setting and really made the story look alive. They are so well trained and were able to know everything in 3 weeks. I loved the bit where the Queen figured out what love really is and it was very inspiring. (Alexandra)

I loved the modern approach on loads of poems such as The Owl and the Pussycat, Miss Muffet and the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland. The singing was lovely and very Opera like. They stayed in character and some people changed costumes. The props were colourful and big and filled the opera well. (Lana)

I thought the singing was kinda cool really because the actors were able to sing so high. (Jonathan)

The singing was good and so was the acting. The costumes looked very unique and the scenery stayed the same but they moved it around so it looked different. (Daniel)

Stage 3 trip to the Sydney Jewish museum

Stage three went to the Sydney Jewish Museum where we were greeted by the author of the book ‘Once’ by Morris Gleitzman. He discussed why he wrote the book and revealed to us that he is writing the seventh book in the series.

Next we met a survivor from the Holocaust, her name was Ana. She told us about her ride to the concentration camp and how she and 90 other Jewish people were crammed in one small wooden carriage. They were only allowed two slices of bread (one for breakfast and one for dinner) with only a little bit of marmalade and limited water.

We learnt that we should appreciate living in such a wonderful society. That we are lucky and it’s all in the past and to accept people for who they are.

Library

To coincide with Grandfriends’ Day and the Easter Hat Parade, a Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the Library.

When: Friday 12/4/19
Time: 8.30am - 3.30pm
Location: Library

The Book Fair is an opportunity for students and their families to visit the Library, view the resources that are available for purchase and buy books and other items from the display for themselves.

The Library benefits from all purchases made on the day as we are given a percentage (in cash/books) of the total sales. Such fundraisers are vital in providing much needed resources for the students to read and borrow.

Election and Camp Out Wrap

Thank you to all our BBQers, Bakers, Stall Volunteers, Coordinators, and Buyers who helped contribute to a very successful Election. It was great to see the roster full - sharing the load.

And what excitement was had at the Movie Night and Camp Out. Luckily the downpour was while we were watching the movie under cover. Many brave campers stayed overnight and for the hearty breakfast. It was fantastic to see the school community come together for this fun event for all ages.

Canteen Needs Volunteers to Remain Open

We need your help and cannot run it without you. Please sign up at the link below. If we do not get more volunteers, we will have to cancel more days and potentially be forced to close canteen for the year.
