Principal’s Message
Student initiative
I was pleased to read letters from students in 1/2 Red recently that outlined their ideas to support farmers affected by drought. As a result, the school will hold a fundraiser called ‘Fiver for a Farmer’ on Thursday 6 September. Please see details further on in this newsletter. Well-done 1/2 Red

Congratulations
Congratulations to 1/2 Blue, Ms Smith and Mrs Cronin for the presentation of a wonderful musical performance at the last K-6 assembly. At SIPPS we work hard to ensure that all students benefit from quality music education which was showcased by 1/2 Blue’s assembly performance. All students played a musical instrument with confidence, skill and enjoyment.
Healthy Kids Initiative & Life Education
As well as having the Life Education program underway, our school has also registered for this year’s celebration of Fruit & Veg Month 2018. This will be held over the month of September - from Monday 3rd to Friday 28th September.
We currently run the ‘Crunch and Sip’ and ‘Healthy Canteen’ initiatives. Teachers recently reminded students that fruit & vegies such as apples, carrots etc. should be cut up into manageable pieces. This enables students to finish eating within a short timeframe, whilst continuing with their learning.
Please be assured that recent rumours surrounding the banning of apples is incorrect. Any official communication from the school would be sent on school letter head or through the official communication channels such as The Patter or Schoolzine App. Parents are encouraged to contact the school directly if you ever have questions about school related matters.
Native Birds at SIPPS
At SIPPS we enjoy an abundance of native wildlife due to our palatial grounds. New planting around the school over the last few years has provided additional bird attracting plants. Sharing our wonderful natural environment with our animal friends brings many great opportunities as well as some challenges.
Last week for example, we had the joy of seeing up close a family of yellow tailed black cockatoos. Two parent birds were feasting on hakea cones in order to feed their hungry and noisy baby.
Also at this time of year some birds can become very defensive of their nests. One such bird is nesting in a tree inside the lower Acron Road school entrance that runs past the hall. We have had reports of the bird swooping people as they enter the school via this gate.
Students and parents can avoid any potential distress or harm by using an alternative entrance and exit to the school while the bird is in this protective mode. The alternative school entrances are the top Acron Road gate next to the children’s pedestrian crossing and the Woodbury Road entrance.

Congratulations to organisers of last Friday’s P&C student disco event. Thank you to parents and teachers who volunteered their time on Friday evening to ensure that our students enjoyed some additional mid-term socialising, fitness and fun. These joint events go a long way in supporting a positive school culture at SIPPS.

Arts Alive Primary Choral Concert
On Tuesday August 7 the SIPPS Senior choir set off for the Sydney Town Hall to perform alongside hundreds of fellow students in the Arts Alive music festival. The day began with a bus ride over the Harbour Bridge and into the city. The choirs rehearsed for three hours to polish their performances of a varied program of music which included traditional American and Australian songs, jazz songs, a Beatles song and even a song about a duck composed by Australian singer/songwriter Rachel Collis. They were also treated to inspirational performances by a number of incredibly talented students from around the region – most notably Dhara Cullen from Bilgola Plateau PS, who played “A Thousand Years” on her harp. Congratulations to our students who worked so hard in their own time to learn their music and make a contribution to a fantastic concert. Many thanks also to parents and families for supporting your children in their participation. Bravo to all!
What's Been Happening in 5/6 Red...
5/6 Red have been learning about Poetry. Year 6 wrote 'winter' themed poems and Year 5 wrote 'shape' poems about storms. We also learnt all about Haiku's and wrote about some of our favourite things!
We also read a book called 'If I Was Prime Minister' by Beck & Robin Feiner and wrote our own responses!
We think we would make wonderful Prime Ministers in the future!
Earth Parliament Years 5 and 6
5/6Red and 5/6Blue showcased Semester One's work at Open Day during Education Week. Stage 3 created their own 'State' as part of 'Earth Parliament'. Each group had to assign themselves parliamentary roles, write their States constitution, style of government, create town maps, flags, bills and laws, and their policies on Health and Education. Parents, grandparents, siblings, friends and students then voted for the most liveable State.
All the students did a wonderful job and demonstrated outstanding Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best

Peer Support Update
Week 5
We introduce a 3 step model this week to encourage resilient responses; Pause, Plan, Proceed. The children take part in an activity to identify their feelings and the immediate effects on their bodies ie butterflies in their stomachs. The normalcy of feelings is acknowledged and the importance of being proactive is stressed. The children learn that pausing when they are emotional is helpful. They can do this by being still, taking a deep breath or counting to ten. Pausing gives children space to see a situation more accurately before planning a response.
Ask your child to describe the 3 steps of the model and what is involved in each one.
Week 6
This week the focus is on step 2 of the model, Plan. In Peer Support children learn the need to develop a range of coping strategies and be creative in drawing on these when planning responses. Responses include persevering, seeing the positive side to situations and engaging in activities they enjoy as a distraction for a short time.
Encourage your child to talk with you about strategies they could use as difficulties arise.

Children's crossings
These are part-time crossings which operate just before and after school hours, as well as other times such as school excursions and lunch times. They are highlighted by red flags with the words CHILDREN CROSSING on them.
When the flags are displayed you must slow down and stop before the stop line if a pedestrian is on or entering the crossing. You must not proceed until all pedestrians have left the crossing.
You must not stop on or within 20 metres before or 10 metres after, a children’s crossing.
Combined children's and pedestrian crossing
Some pedestrian crossings are used as children’s crossings at some times during the day. The display of CHILDREN CROSSING flags means that the children's crossing is operating.
When the flags are not displayed the crossing operates as a normal pedestrian crossing.

Helping Hands OOSH & Vacation Care
A warm hello from the team at OOSH!
We have enjoyed a fabulous holiday program and a great start to the new term. Highlights included a Spooktacular science incursion where we learnt about the rainbows on the surface of bubbles, experimented with dry ice, made our own lava lamps and even got to launch the most amazing coke and mentos rocket!
We were also visited by a group of friendly reptiles. It was so exciting to have the opportunity to hold snakes, lizards, frogs, crocodiles and even a giant cockroach! They are fascinating creatures. A holiday highlight is always our excursions. We visited the Powerhouse Museum and enjoyed lots of hands on experimenting. In the final week of the holidays we visited Sky Zone, the ultimate trampoline park for a day of bouncing and play! Each day was a great mix of cooking club, soccer tournaments, learning new games, enjoying art and hanging out with our friends.
Stay tuned for our Spring holiday program!
In other news, OOSH is now online! We have a new booking system which allows you to enrol, update your details and making changes from home or on the go. It’s free to register, simply click the following link and select register.
