Celebrating Education Week 2018
This year’s theme, Today’s schools – creating tomorrow’s world, highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. This mirrors our own school’s vision of Inspiring and Nurturing Successful Lifelong Learners through delivering a curriculum that offers an excellent Balance between Work and Play.
Our school community provides opportunities for students to succeed across academic, social and emotional domains. They develop skills, attitudes and dispositions to better prepare them for the future challenges as active, engaged and responsible global citizens. That is why learning at SIPPS focuses on developing things like:
- STEM capabilities
- Strong foundations in literacy and numeracy
- Positive Behaviour for Learning
- Growth mindset
- Critical thinking
- Collaboration
- Goal setting
- Emotion coaching
- Environmental Sustainability
- Physical fitness and healthy lifestyles
- Cultural understandings that promote respect, reconciliation and cooperation with others.
Our students also enjoy many opportunities to engage in appreciating and using the creative process across all artistic domains. This year thanks to the expertise of our teachers we have outstanding teaching/learning and enrichment programs in Visual Arts, Music, Dance and Drama.
This was clearly evident at last week’s Open Day performance and at the Arts Alive concert in the Sydney Town Hall where our senior choir. In addition our school community will have further opportunity to appreciate our students’ artistic talents at two upcoming events:
- SIPPS Art Exhibition – Running for two weeks from Monday September 24 at St Ives Shopping Village
- SIPPS Spectacular – Tuesday September 25 at 6pm in school hall
The continual triumph of SIPPS and Public Education is that all this and more is available to every young citizen. Our students are particularly lucky because of our unique setting, quality teaching and community engagement and support.
Thank you to all those who advocate for our school and its students through positively supporting our efforts in equipping future citizens with all they need to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s world.

SRC NAIDOC initiative
Thank you to the SRC and school community who raised $345 in support of the Koori Kids Foundation. This SRC fundraiser coincided with August 4 which was Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day.

Staying informed
The school puts a great deal of effort and time into providing regular updates on what’s happening at SIPPS through our Schoolzine newsletter and app. In each edition there are also articles that classes put together to celebrate great learning and achievement of our students. This is the main method of communication from the school to parents.
The Patter, our fortnightly school newsletter is issued in a paperless format and emailed to every family. There is also the option to subscribe through the Schoolzine app for automatic delivery of the newsletter and other notifications which are sent out from the school.
The calendar function provides families with information about upcoming events at the school and should be referred to as part of preparation for the school week. In the interest of effective communication between school and home, it’s necessary for every SIPPS family to regularly access this application. Currently only 94 individuals have subscribed to the school app which represents only around 50% of the school community.
Please see following information on how to download Schoolzine app.

K Blue Seahorses
In Kindergarten we have Literacy Groups every morning. We are super lucky when some days we have special helpers that come into our classroom.
In this group we are writing our sight words. We jumbled all the letters around and then we unjumbled them again. It was funny to see the words look all different.
In this group I am writing in my book. The story is about my pirate. He found treasure on the beach. The trees were green and the sand was bright.

In this group I am matching the words. I had to put the words together that were the same. It was fun to play this game.
In this group we are playing Rocket speller on the iPads. We have to look at the picture and spell the words. When you get the word correct, you get pieces of a rocket ship. When the rocket ship is finished your alien ship, you blast off!

We do Literacy Groups every day to help us to learn to read and write. We have learnt a lot and had fun !
Peer Support Update
Week 3
This week in Peer Support children will discuss skills and how to communicate their feelings and needs to others. The children will discuss skills they use when participating in a variety of activities. When children understand they already have many of the skills needed to succeed, they can feel more confident when trying something new. The children are asked to identify events which trigger different feelings. Encourage your child to remember the skills they have used in one activity when trying something new. Also encourage your child to communicate their feelings and needs.
Week 4
This week in Peer Support children will revise what they have learned about resilience and discuss the people who show them support. Through a story the children identify where the character has used her personal qualities, strengths and skills to help her overcome challenges. They identify times when she needed support to continue. The children discuss a range of challenges and determine the best person to approach for support. The children consolidate the protective factors for resilience by revising their own strengths and skills and identifying 5 people they can go to for support. Remind your child of their qualities and skills and encourage them to ask for help in challenging situations.
SPECTRA Science Award Cards
The SPECTRA Science Award Cards have arrived and been given to classroom teachers to distribute to students participating in this optional activity. Students complete their Science activities at home and bring them in to show their class. Each time an activity on the card is completed the classroom teacher will sign it off. Those with a Junior SPECTRA card must complete 3 activities to qualify for their award. Those with a SPECTRA card must complete activities worth a total of 20 stars to qualify for their award. Students are to submit their finished cards by the end of Term 3. They will then be forwarded to ASTA (Australian Science Teachers Association) who will issue the students with a badge and certificate. We hope the students enjoy learning about their chosen topic and look forward to hearing all about their scientific investigations.

Children's crossings
These are part-time crossings which operate just before and after school hours, as well as other times such as school excursions and lunch times. They are highlighted by red flags with the words CHILDREN CROSSING on them.
When the flags are displayed you must slow down and stop before the stop line if a pedestrian is on or entering the crossing. You must not proceed until all pedestrians have left the crossing.
You must not stop on or within 20 metres before or 10 metres after, a children’s crossing.
Combined children's and pedestrian crossing
Some pedestrian crossings are used as children’s crossings at some times during the day. The display of CHILDREN CROSSING flags means that the children's crossing is operating.
When the flags are not displayed the crossing operates as a normal pedestrian crossing.
