Student Leaders visit NSW Parliament House

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of accompanying our school Captains and Vice Captains to State Parliament House. We enjoyed a guided tour of the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council. Aden, Rachael, Ella and Patrick joined other student leaders from schools across the Davidson electorate and were presented with a certificate from the local Member of Parliament, Jonathan O’Dea.

PLAYING SAFE – new guidelines

Recently the Department of Education issued new guidelines for the installation and maintenance of playground equipment in NSW government schools. This advice requires us to check our existing fixed playground equipment and its use to ensure it meets with the revised standards.

The department’s documentation states that school must provide direct supervision by a teacher whenever fixed playground equipment is in use. As this is not possible after school hours, the equipment can no longer be used by students after school with or without parental supervision. The school will provide alternative times during school hours for students to access the playground equipment once it has been checked. We thank parents and carers for their cooperation in the interests of child safety and wellbeing.

Thank you SIPPS Parents & Citizens

Last night’s P&C Annual General Meeting was a chance to look back on the success of 2017 and reflect on the positive and effective partnership SIPPS enjoys with our parent community. I would like to thank and congratulate this year’s representatives on a successful school year and all that it has achieved for our students and the school community.

Activities such as the uniform shop, election mini-fete, student disco and parent trivia night would not be possible without the dedication of our parent volunteers. Congratulations also to our new 2018 P&C representatives who were elected last night.

Best Wishes
Gillian Tegg

Kindergarten Assembly Performance

On Wednesday 8th November, Kindergarten presented a performance of Goldilocks and the Three Bears at assembly.

Kindergarten students have been studying drama this term and were very excited to share all that they had learned about voice projection and expression. All students did a wonderful job of learning their lines and everyone performed confidently on the day.

It was great to have so many parents come to watch and support Kindergarten’s first assembly performance. We appreciate your involvement in this event.

Inspiring & Nurturing Successful Lifelong Learners

2FT have enjoyed learning about poetry and how to include imagery in their writing. They thought about their 5 senses and what it is like watching the fireworks on New Years Eve to write these poems and art works.

STEAM chicks reports

On Thursday and Tuesday we went to St Ives High to do a “STEAM CHICKS” program.

On the first day we built a bridge out of popsicle sticks and tape. After that we made towers out of marshmallows and skewers. After lunch we did math. In maths we made rectangular prisms. On the second day we did art and design. In art and design we made jellyfish out of rubbish. I really enjoyed this experience and it was very fun ! I think I learnt a lot.

Isobel Year 5

We participated in a STEAM Program at St Ives High. On the first day we did engineering and maths. For engineering we had to build a bridge, and learnt about what shape would be best to hold it. Then we built a bridge that had to hold a certain amount of marbles. For the second task we had to build a tower out of marshmallows which was lots of fun!

For maths we experimented with glass bottles and water and see what different notes they made.

Emily year 5

We participated at the STEAM chicks program at St Ives High. It was a 2 day program where we learned about science and engineering. On our first day we developed our construction skills because we were building towers, bridges and rectangular prism. On our second day we learnt about the great pacific garbago patch and how many jellyfish die - in recognition we built jellyfish out of plastic.

Mathilde Yr 5

We participated in the STEAM program at St Ives High. The first day we went was Thursday. The first session we built bridges. The first bridge we built was out of paddle pop sticks and sticky tape. The bridge that held the most weight won. The second thing we built was out of marshmallows and skewers. You had to build the highest tower. This taught me and the rest SIPPS students that we can do engineering. It was very amazing and I would love to do it again .

Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4)

On Thursday the 26th of October, Stage Two (Years 3 and 4) took part in the Digi Ed ‘Stop Motion’ experience. Stop Motion is a film technique in which clay models are placed on a set and a still photo is taken. The clay model is then moved slightly and another photo is taken. This process is repeated as the story develops until finally when all the photos are played in quick succession, the end result is a short film. Wallace and Gromit is a famous example of this technique, as are the adventures of Pingu the penguin.

Firstly, students were given a demonstration of the equipment they would be using which included a laptop with movie making software, a camera, blocks of coloured modelling clay and cardboard for the backdrops of each setting. Once this demonstration was complete, the students were keen to get stuck into their own model making. However, before this could be done, students needed to complete their own ‘storyboards’ – another word for the basic drawings that outlined the events of their stories.

Finally, students were on to filming their own Stop Motion short films. Characters were painstakingly built from clay, backgrounds creatively sketched and photos frantically taken. The clay models would then be moved a tiny amount to simulate movement once the final film was played.

After lunch, students then had the chance to edit their movies and add a title, credits and most exciting of all, sound effects and music. The films of our young, aspiring directors really came to life once music was introduced to set the mood of a scene.

It was an incredible experience for the Stage Two classes involved and the final films created by every group are a reflection of all the hard work and effort put in on the day.
