September PBL Focus

R/Principal’s Message

It has been a highly productive end to the term at St Ives Park Public School for students, staff and P&C. Our Father’s Day breakfast event was a great success with many proud fathers and children enjoying a delicious breakfast and a tour of the special artworks made by their children. A huge thank you to our P&C and parent community who volunteered their time and made this Father’s Day breakfast event a great success.

Thanks also to the P&C for their organisation and running of the Council Election Day Festivities. Your ongoing support and fund raising efforts are greatly appreciated and make a huge difference to the resources and educational programs we are able to offer to our students.

We have many student achievements to recognise in this edition of The Patter. Our four Premier’s Spelling Bee finalists Maximus, Evie H, Jay and Rachael proudly represented our school in the local final at Mona Vale Public School; the senior Arts Alive Choir performed amazingly at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Arts Alive Primary Choral Concert; and our SRC organised yet another successful fundraising event for Stewart House with the Onesie and Pyjama Day. Well done to all the students who have represented our school with respect and responsibility and made the most of the learning opportunities we offer at SIPPS.

Throughout this term all students have been working diligently to develop movement skills and learn their choreographed dances for the SIPPS Spectacular night. We look forward to sharing and celebrating the culmination of their hard work at our performance ‘Dance Through the Ages’ this week.

My personal best wishes to all students, parents and staff for a safe, relaxing and well-earned break. I pass on my appreciation of your individual and collective efforts throughout what has been a busy and exciting Term 3.

K-2 Seed Harvest Spoon Program K-2

As our K-2 Seed Harvest Spoon program draws to close, we asked the students to reflect on some of the things they have learnt throughout the term.

We have learnt how to take care of plants and nature. We learnt all about bees and insects. There are lots of different kinds of insects and bees, like the Blue Banded Bee. Bees are so special to us because they give us honey and also some clothes.

We even planted some potatoes. Potatoes are vegetables that are really heavy. The potato seeds were so tiny.

We did some watering in Seed Harvest Spoon. We ate chocolate seeds that tasted a little disgusting.

Then finally we got to use the vegetables we planted to make a stir fry. We added different kinds of vegetables. Our class got to cook and we had a great time. We also got to eat the stir fry.

We had a great time at Seed Harvest Spoon.

At Seed Harvest Spoon this term we learnt about plants such as veggies. We also learnt about bees such as the Blue Banded, European Honey Bee, Teddy Bear Bee and lots of others.

At Seed Harvest Spoon one time we had a chocolate with no sugar or milk. It was tasty and yummy.

At Garden Club we planted some seedlings. In the final week we made rainbow stir fry, it was yummy! We have had the best term at Seed Harvest Spoon.

2FT have written about some of their highlights. We hope you enjoy reading their work and seeing some photos of our 'Harvest and Feast' lesson.

Maths Olympiad

Congratulations to our Stage 3 students who participated in this year’s Maths Olympiad Problem Solving Competition. As the competition has drawn to a close, the students have been able to reflect on their progression over the year and the range of problem solving skills they now use. All students have shown development in their ability to work through complex multi-step problems and setting out their Mathematical working. We would like to recognise and thank Adele Lousick who has worked closely with these students as a volunteer throughout the year. Her hard work and dedication to the students is greatly appreciated. Adele will continue to work with students across grades 2-6 each Wednesday.

Robotics

Last week 1/2E tested their engineering skills using the Wedo Lego 2 robots. Here are some pictures and recounts of our lesson.

Last Friday, we played with the new Wedo Robots, oh yeah! It was very challenging with the tasks but that just made it more fun! I found the most fun was building a moving vehicle (not motorised).

By Charlie 1/2E

Last Friday 1/2E went to the STEAM room to play with special Wedo Lego robots. We got to discuss the familiar Lego parts and the unfamiliar Lego parts. Most of us found out what the unfamiliar parts were.

The second thing we did was to build something that can move without electronic motors. Sophie and I built a version of Santa's sleigh, it used wheels instead of reindeer and could only move along the ground.

At the end of the lesson we got to tell everyone the thing we weren't familiar with and told everyone what their group thought it could be.

SRC News

The SRC's pyjama and onesie day was a huge success, with $269.40 being raised for Stewart House. Thank you to all those who donated and to Mrs Fazzolari for counting and processing the money through the office. A great effort by all at SIPPS!

Peer Support

This term Year 6 taught a program called Peer Support. The Year 6 leaders taught the students in their group about anti-bullying, standing up for themselves, being resilient, taking initiative and how to approach challenging situations. The groups varied from students in Kindergarten to Year 6, with usually one student from each class. We as Peer Support leaders have had the experience of being a teacher, dealing with difficult students, being confident and assertive and also being ready and organised for each lesson. We have gotten closer together as a group, learning more about each other, through the activities we did. In our experience, it has been a pleasure to have the opportunity to be a part time teacher, even if only once a fortnight. In Week 10, we will conclude this program with a party, to celebrate Peer Support’s end for this year.

By Meshma and Rachael

For two terms now year 6 have been teaching younger kids about anti-bullying, which is called ‘Peer Support’. They teach them about how to handle situations like: how to stand up for yourself, keeping yourself safe, etc. This also allows you to say your own opinion about difficult situations and how you would approach them. The Peer support leaders ( year 6) hand out catch cards and other rewards so that people know that they're doing the right thing. After two terms (in week 10), the Peer support leaders host a party that the whole group participates in. My experience at peer support was great because l learned about life lessons and l also taught some as well and always had fun.

By Charlotte 5/6S

For the semester the whole school was involved in peer support. Peer support was led by year 6. Peer support was all about teaching kids about bullying and challenging situations and how to sort them out. It also taught kids how to make really important decisions about bullying. There were also games where you had to make your own decisions. Next week all the peer support groups are going to have a party to conclude peer support.

By Isobel 5/6S

Through the last 2 terms our SIPPS year 6’s have taught our kindy - year five students a program called Peer Support. This program allows students to be encouraged to stand up for themselves from bullies, to always do the right thing and make life situations all in a fun way. This program also allows children to get rewards for doing the right thing in the group activities and trying their hardest. The groups are usually made up of one student from each grade which makes seven people each group. In week 10 we will conclude this year's Peer Support with a party to celebrate the ending of Peer Support for this year. My experience with Peer Support has been a smooth journey, through fun games to difficult life choices.

By Bella 5|6S

For the past 2 terms the school have had a program going called peer support. The leaders of peer support were all the year sixes. The whole school was involved which meant 1 person from each year got put in a group with students that are younger and older than them. This program helps children to learn about how to protect themselves from bullies and how to stand up for themselves or their friends. This program also involved games. I loved having peer support as it allowed me to have my own opinion and as well as have lots of fun at the same time.

Life Education

Healthy Harold returned for another visit to St Ives Park Public School. Students in Kindergarten to Year 6 visited the Healthy Harold van and learnt about healthy living and drug education as part of the PD/H/PE (Personal Development and Health and Physical Education) curriculum. All students and teachers thoroughly enjoyed this learning experience, particularly when they met Healthy Harold.

Miss Shin and Mrs Field

Today we went to Healthy Harold. I learnt that you can always help your friends. You can call emergency services (000). For example, I will say that I broke my leg, it will be a 000.

You can be safe in the bush, shops, playground and the classroom with doing this, stay with a parent or stay with a friend too.

2FT loved having a campfire because the lights were off and it was warm in there. We packed his bag and it was so fun. My favourite part was the campfire.

Beatrix 2FT

We went to Healthy Harold and we learnt how to be safe. We learnt about some of these things: how to be safe in the bush and when to call emergency services- 000.

I enjoyed all of it! I especially liked Healthy Harold the puppet!

Jamison 2FT

Today we visited Healthy Harold. We learned what makes a good friend. I also learnt how to call emergency services. We also learnt how to be safe almost everywhere. I enjoyed everything, especially Healthy Harold and the campfire.

Reuben 2FT

Today we had Healthy Harold. Poor Boots fell and hurt herself. Harold was very nice to Boots. Boots hurt her ankle.

By Olivia 1S

At Healthy Harold we looked at what makes an emergency. We did a wall stencil. We saw ambulances, police and fire fighters. We also had a pretend fire. We watched a clip of Healthy Harold. We packed his bag and car for the bush walk.

By Felix 1S

At Healthy Harold we made a pretend fire and we also went pretend camping. Libby turned off the lights and it was very dark and there were some little stars on the roof.

By Michelle 1S

We just had Healthy Harold. We played games. When Libby turned the lights off there were stars on the ceiling. We watched Harold take the fridge out of the car! We also saw Boots fall over. Last we saw Boots, Red and Harold toasting marshmallows.

By Chelsea 1S

Today we went to see Healthy Harold. We saw him camping with his friends Boots and Red. Boots ran after a goanna and hurt her ankle. Harold went to get help and Boots said “Look out for my goanna!” We learnt if there is an emergency we have to call 000. There are three things to remember. Stay calm, don’t shout and answer the questions.

By Katherine

This week our school has visited Healthy Harold for an incursion. Healthy Harold is an annual program in our school where we have a lesson to teach us about our health and drugs. It educates us about drugs and the effect they have on our bodies and the different types of drugs and what they do. We also learnt about the drugs that are illegal and why they aren’t allowed and medication which are also drugs that are prescribed by doctors. We looked at the different ways you can refuse detrimental drugs and why you definitely shouldn’t take them. Healthy Harold is an extremely interactive place to learn with all sorts of different ways you learn and is especially exciting at the end of the lesson when you get to meet Healthy Harold, the giraffe who lives in the van which you learn in which is a puppet. Our school thoroughly enjoyed this experience.

Arts Alive Primary Choral Concert

On Thursday September 7 the SIPPS Senior choir had the amazing experience of performing alongside hundreds of fellow students in the iconic Sydney Opera House. The choir performed a varied program of music ranging from traditional folk songs to music composed by Australian composer Sally Whitwell especially for the occasion. They were also treated to inspirational performances by a number of incredibly talented students from around the region. Congratulations to our students who worked so hard in their own time to learn their music and make a contribution to a fantastic concert. Many thanks also to parents for supporting your children in their participation. Bravo to all!

Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra Performance Opportunity

Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra has invited SIPPS choir to perform at a charity concert on Sunday 3rd December at 4pm at St Ives Uniting Church. This is a wonderful performance opportunity for our students for a very worthy cause. A note will be sent home before the end of term for any students from grades 3-6 who may wish to participate and can commit to coming along on a Sunday afternoon.

Visual Arts

Students in 1/2E have been looking at modern Aboriginal painting and were encouraged to use bright, modern colours in their artworks.

First, they painted a background with acrylic paint. Next they drew a platypus to fit the space, cut it out and used it as a pattern to trace around. Finally, they added a border and symbolic patterns, using oil pastels. What a fantastic display of shapes, colours and patterns.

Well done 1/2E!

Helping Hands OOSH & Vacation Care

Helping Hands

We will be running a holiday program during the school holidays: Monday 25th September – Friday 6th October, we are open from 7am – 6.30pm each day. Our program is included in this newsletter or you can collect a copy from us in the OOSH room! Children from other schools are welcome to enrol for the holiday program, so if your child has friends who attend another school feel free to pass our information along.

Part of our policy and procedure requires parents to notify us if their child will be absent from OOSH for any reason. This could include going on a holiday, representing the school at an event or being sick. Parents can contact us by phone, text or email to notify us of an absence. If we are unable to contact parents and locate a child by 3.40pm we are required to contact the police and report the child missing. If your routine changes make sure you let us know!

If you’re interested in using the service during the term or during the holidays please pop in and ask for enrolment forms so we can get you started. It’s a good idea to be enrolled so that if you ever need last minute care you only need to make a call to book your children in.
