Principal’s Message
Welcome back
This week I have been delighted to witness a great deal of positive energy and enthusiasm for learning from students returning to school this week. Several new families have joined the SIPPS school community this week. The new students across all stages are settling in very well.
We also extend a very warm welcome to new and relieving members of the SIPPS staff. Mrs Rhonda Fazzolari has joined us as School Administration Manager. Ms Madeline Borrowman is replacing Mrs Allman in the library for Term 3. An additional Student Learning Support Officer, Talya Bass has been employed to support Kindergarten this semester.
We also welcome students from Macquarie University undertaking their teaching practicums with us this term. We have already met Mr Younis and Mr Cooper this week.
Thanks to the junior dance group and senior choir for their performances at our first assembly for Term 3. At the next K-6 assembly ribbons will be awarded to those students for their performance at our recent Athletics Carnival.
ART Exhibition
I am really looking forward to attending the major exhibition of SIPPS student artworks from Monday 31st July to August 11 at the St Ives Shopping Village gallery. Thank you to those parents who have volunteered to help hang the artworks up in the gallery on Monday 31st.
Dance for fitness & fun program
This term dance program will be run across the school provided by Got Game. Our dance teacher is Rachael Monro. Our students have already made an energetic and enthusiastic start to the program this week. Parents will be able to see students perform dance items developed from these sessions at our SIPPS Spectacular. Please save Tuesday 19th September in your diary. Costs associated with this program will be included in the Term 3 student invoices statements.
Education Week
Education Week is a major event on the NSW public schools calendar. 2017’s theme is ‘I learn, we learn’, celebrating personalised student learning as the foundation of public education in NSW.
Education Week this year is next week (from Monday 31 July to Friday 4 August).
SIPPS activities for education week include:
- Monday 31st July - Recorder ensemble performs at the Sydney Opera House in The Festival of Instrumental Music.
- Tuesday 1st August - Performance showcase and open classrooms.
- All week – SIPPS art exhibition at St Ives Shopping Village. Selected artworks by students across all stages.
The Partners in Learning parent feedback survey
This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.
Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.
The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, ipads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 21 August and 13 October. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.
Our school will provide further information about how to access the survey. In the meantime, more information about the survey is available at:

Positive Behaviour for Learning
This semester we are rolling out new initiatives to enhance students’ ability to meet the expectations that we value at SIPPS. Students are focussing on showing Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best as they transition around our school. Each class has developed their own way of remembering what is important when moving around the school. Arriving at school on time will also assist your child to experience success in this area. This initiative will ensure that all our students make the most of their learning time at school. Thank you for your support and assistance in this matter.
To acknowledge and reward students who display positive behaviour we have improved our catch card system. 50 catch cards will now earn students special PBL wristbands. The students are extremely enthusiastic about the changes to our system. Please ask you child to tell you more about it.
Seed Harvest Spoon Returns
This term our K-2 students will be commencing an 8 week program provided by educators from non-profit organisation Seed, Harvest, Spoon. Our 3-6 students will undertake another 8 week program in Term 4. Please see the weekly learning program below.
Program fees have been heavily subsidised by the SIPPS P&C. The remainder of the cost will be included in Term 3 invoice statements.
Once again our eco-garden will spring to life with the help of the Seed, Harvest Spoon personnel, Mrs Took and enthusiastic students who will form our eco-garden club volunteers from across the school. We also invite interested parent and senior volunteers from our school community to be involved. Please contact Mrs Took or the school office if you are able to spend any time helping out in the Eco Garden.
NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. NAIDOC Week is held in the first full week of July. It is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society.
Coinciding with NAIDOC celebrations, our school has enhanced the new STEAM learning studio with the installation of a carpet designed by award-winning contemporary Aboriginal artist Danielle Mate Sullivan. This unique piece of indigenous art depicts the Dharawal People’s story of the seasons.
Also the weekly Seed, Harvest, Spoon lessons include explicit learning links to cross curriculum priority areas of Sustainability & Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures. This week, educator Natalie taught students how to recognise the seasons according to the Dharawal People’s story.

Creative Arts News
Visual Arts
Kindergarten have created artworks which have been inspired by an Aboriginal story about a tricky mistletoe bird called Barn-barn Barlala. First they painted an ancient brown-looking background from a mixture of primary colours. Then they used acrylic paint to paint the bird’s outline and the branch on which it is sitting. Finally they drew the leaves and berries and decorated the bird in traditional Aboriginal colours to make it look like a rock painting. We are very delighted with the results!
