L3 Parent forum

All K-2 parents are invited to a special Term 2 Parent Forum next Thursday 19 May at 2:20pm in the KA classroom. This will be a chance for parents to find out about the Language, Learning and Literacy (L3) program that is implemented in all K-2 classes. The presenter is leading L3 trainer Kylie Bull.

L3 is an effective research-based literacy program that supports the development of informed, systematic, explicit instruction based on data to target reading and writing.

Teachers undertake professional learning under a qualified trainer to develop literacy learning plans and targeted teaching that reflects individual student learning needs, and is based on ongoing data collection. They learn techniques for planning and delivering instruction to small groups and to the whole class. Trainers support teachers' developing pedagogies by giving feedback and reflecting collaboratively, using regular classroom observations.

Kindergarten Open Morning

Enrolments are now being accepted for Kindergarten 2017. We look forward to welcoming families who are planning to join our wonderful school community in 2017. Thank you to Linda Croft for printing and distributing Kindy Orientation information to local preschools.

School Uniform

I would like to thank parents for their efforts to ensure that our students are coming to school in the correct school winter uniform. It is also a way that students demonstrate the school expectation of Respect as it is a reflection on how they value themselves and others. Below is a list of the elements in our girls and boys winter school uniform.

SIPPS involved in Vivid 2016

Our Stage 3 students have contributed to this Sydney's 2016 Vivid event, Taronga's 10 Legacy Be the Light for the Wild.

This special event features ten critical species from Australia and Sumatra, ranging from the magnificent Asian elephant to the brightly coloured Corroboree frogs, species that Taronga is committed to protecting. With interactive lighting, sound effects and moving parts, these giant light sculptures will be among the largest and most technologically advanced lanterns ever to feature in Vivid. They will be augmented by a supporting cast of animals including an echidna, chameleon and even a funnel-web spider, along with thousands of smaller lanterns made by NSW school students as part of Taronga's Centenary celebrations. SIPPS students in Years 3-6 worked in teams to create the Asian elephant lanterns which will feature in the display. These students will receive free entry to this event.

When: May 27 until June 18
Where: Bradleys Head Rd, Mosman
Cost: Pre-purchase your tickets at taronga.org.au/vivid
Adult: $17.95
Child: $11.95 (4-15 years)
The cost of entry is contributing to Taronga's Conservation Commitment.
Note: Last entry at 9pm

Tickets can be booked from the following link:

Tell them From Me Survey

Recently 54 of our students in Years 4 to 6 participated in the Tell Them from Me survey. This survey measures 20 indicators based on the most recent research on school and classroom effectiveness. 2016. Findings from this first snapshot were recently issued and will be reported on at the next P&C meeting.

After School Supervision

As parents are aware, there is no teacher supervision of students after school when the bell rings at 3.10pm as parents are expected to collect their children at that time. Students who attend after-school activities need to promptly make their way to either OOSH, tennis, language classes or other scheduled activity. If you find there will be a delay in arriving by 3.10pm please ring the office as soon as this is known so we can get a message to your child/children and ask them to wait on the office verandah or send them to OOSH.

After locating children and school bags etc, we expect all parents and children to move off the school grounds by 3.30pm. All students are aware that if their parents do not appear promptly they are to wait on the office verandah. This is reinforced regularly with students. Parents, please do not to ask your children to wait at a pedestrian gate or on the footpath outside the school as this is not safe.

Parents must closely supervise any K-2 children who are on the play equipment and please collect children and belongings and move off the school grounds when the 3.30 bell rings.

Warm Regards
Gillian Tegg

Inspiring & Nurturing Successful Lifelong Learners

Learning to Lead

All Year 6 students at SIPPS enjoy the opportunity to experience leadership roles that enhance learning and engagement for K-6 students. Currently Year 6 students under the guidance of Miss Forsyth, are undertaking Peer Support Training in the new anti-bullying module called STRONGER TOGETHER: A Positive Anti-Bullying Outlook. This module draws on positive psychology principles such as fostering strengths, gratitude and kindness in students. In this way, preventative measures are combined with the skills students need to combat bullying if it does occur. By utilising the powerful peer led format, the students create their own environment in which to thrive.

Leadership camp report

On the first two days of Term Two, the captains and vice captains of St Ives Park P.S had the privilege of attending a Leadership camp.

All the leaders had a sensational time learning to enhance their leadership qualities through extraordinarily fun activities like laser tag, rock climbing, orienteering and some teamwork challenges.

We all learnt about autocratic and democratic leadership. We also learnt the crucial importance of teamwork and cooperation, numerous communication skills, various ways of committing yourself to a task and your school and better yet, how to apply all these skills to contribute positively to our school society. We have a great number of ideas that we will be discussing with Mrs Tegg to promote teamwork, student engagement in learning and general wellbeing.

We were all so proud to represent a such a fantastic school at such an amazing camp and we recommend it for all future student leaders.

House captain report

On Monday 2nd May, St Ives Park held a cross country carnival at Acron oval. All students participated in the races. As house captains, we thought everyone tried their best. It was a fun and exciting day filled with races and war cries from each house.

From the 8 year olds to 11 year olds, students ran 2 laps while younger students only ran 1 lap of the long and tiring course, but the 12 year olds had to complete 3 laps of the course.

We would like to extend a special thanks to teachers for organising the carnival and to parents for being course marshals. It was a fun and exciting day. We are looking forward to seeing the top 6 from every race competing at zone. Good luck to all students competing at the zone carnival on the 26th May.
