Principal's Message

Last week during Education Week, we celebrated our local heroes. Thank you to all students, staff and parents who provide positive actions and support for our school every day and model our school-wide expectations of Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best. You are the true heroes that help us achieve excellence in the delivery of a quality, inclusive and future focussed curriculum and student wellbeing initiatives that inspire and nurture successful lifelong learners. Thank you to our guest speaker, Karen Wagner, Mrs Park, student leadership team and choir for making our Open Day assembly a special occasion for everyone. We hope everyone also enjoyed the open classroom experience where we showcased our future focused learning.

Our focus for Positive Behaviour Engaging Learning this term is Personal Best. Teachers will provide their classes with explicit teaching that will help all our students know how they can apply and demonstrate their personal best in the different areas of our school. For example the following posters show how students can achieve this and other expectations during assemblies and other formal occasions in the hall.

Congratulations to all students for their wonderful participation in our recent athletics carnival. A very special thank you to St Ives High School Year 10 students and their teacher who also attended to help run the tabloid sports activities. Thank you to all parents who assisted on the day and the P&C for running the cake stall which was enjoyed by many. There is a gallery of photos from the day on the school app.

Congratulations also to Stage 2 students for also engaging fully in their overnight camp to Milson Island. I was very proud to hear how well the students supported their peers and teachers while enjoying a range of fun activities that helped them to develop positive social skills and self-confidence. Photos of the camp are already available on the school app.

We are now enrolling for 2016. The first steps into the education system shape your child's love and enthusiasm for learning. St Ives Park Public School's Kindergarten program encourages children to achieve academically, socially and to become independent and creative learners. Our Kindergarten team are passionate, caring and focused on teaching the school values of Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best. Classrooms are quality learning environments where your child is given the opportunity to learn social and academic skills through active and educational play that integrates the latest technology and teaching practice. If you have a child who is turning 5 before July 31, 2016 and is starting school in 2016, please assist us with our planning by completing an enrolment form as soon as possible. Please see our Kindergarten Orientation flyer later in this bulletin.

Do you like the new look and functionality of The Patter? Please participate in the poll and give us your feedback. Also please don't forget that the school app is another way we communicate with the school community. There is a new enhanced version of the app to download from google play or the apple app store. The username is community and the password is stivesparkps

Finally it was great to host last this month's P&C meeting in our new staffroom space. I hope to see many members of our school community supporting the P&C fundraising initiatives that will enhance the learning environments and opportunities for all SIPPS students. These are Comedy for a Cause on Saturday August 8 and The Bare Creek Trail Run, Sunday November 1.

Best Wishes

Inspiring & Nurturing Successful Lifelong Learners

L3 in the Classroom

Language, Learning and Literacy (L3) is a research-based Kindergarten and Stage One classroom intervention, targeting text reading and writing. L3 provides rich literacy experiences to support all students in Kindergarten and Stage One to become successful Readers and Writers.

Students receive explicit instruction in reading and writing strategies in small groups of two to three selected students. Students then rotate to independent individual or group tasks. This occurs in the daily Literacy session.

Learning spaces in an L3 classroom represent a shift from traditional school design. Spaces are created very intentionally to embody a student-led approach to learning.

This year, Kindergarten and Year 1 teachers are undertaking training to further facilitate the successful implementation of L3 and improve student outcomes in literacy.

Music News

Term 2 was a busy and enjoyable term in Music! The focus for the program was 'Music and the Theatre', in preparation for the upcoming performance of the Opera 'Cinderella' next week.

Earlier in the year Stage 3 completed compositions on the iPads based on a story book called 'The Tiny Seed' by Eric Carle. Each student used one page from the book as inspiration for their piece. These compositions were designed to be played for their Kindergarten buddies. Kindy recently had the opportunity to listen to their compositions and thoroughly enjoyed their music!

Stage 2 have also been doing some composing. They composed their own 4 bar rhythms in 4/4 time and performed their composition on percussion instruments for the class. In some groups they composed a melody, and used the recorders or brass instruments in their performance.

Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 are continuing to explore the musical concepts through singing, moving and playing and they're having lots of fun the process!

This term we have lots of exciting performances coming up! Next Monday is the Festival of Instrumental Music, where the recorder ensemble will perform with hundreds of other students from all over NSW at the Sydney Opera House. A little later in the term the Arts Alive Choir will also be performing at the Opera House. Both of these groups have been working really hard to prepare for these exciting performances and I know that they'll do an exceptional job!
